Discussion for article #236362
did the lecture include the advice to speak slowly and use small words when talking down to the blonde members of the council?
My, my, what a waste of taxpayer money. Sure hope the voters are paying attention.
" She reportedly relied on lessons she’d learned from “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.” "
Amen to that. When you are paying someone to quote from that book, you are seriously wasting everyone’s time.
Did they perchance close with an all-male chorus singing Nothing Like a Dame," “Wives and Lovers,” and “It’s a Man’s World”?
Any discussion about repainting the council chamber pink and adding more throw pillows?
Nah, they are in the trenches awaiting the impending Jade Helm 15 UN/Chinese invasion. Or something…
What does Austin have a city manager for anyway? They’re big enough to have a full-time mayor and professional staff. I always think of a city manager for places where the mayor is a part-time job, and a small staff that needs professional direction.

I think Kristen Schaal would good for at least 15 minutes of gems on this topic.
- Is this the Baby Boomer version of gender relations?
- Do they get to teach all women alike, or does the hair color really make a difference?
- Is it acceptable for men to have egos as long as they’re used in the pursuit of women’s wish lists?
- Can women be dominating as long as the compromising man is in a collar and cuffs?
- Do men think women are asking too many questions if it’s about getting them a beer?
- Would a woman really feel left out if a group of men went to a strip club during lunch?
Stereotypes can be so much fun, who wants to play the avatar for their half of the population?
I tried to type a response while shaking my head, but got distracted when I kept hearing Insane Clown Posse singing: Fucking magnets, how do they work?
And, boo to the video with auto play. TPM usually catches those, but this one got through.
You know, some of us strive for years, decades even, to achieve mastery in our fields. And other folks walk up and demand to be paid fees as trainers, speakers, consultants or whatever because they actually worked with women once, or read a book they bought at an airport. And they get paid! They get paid real money! For all the many times over the years I’ve observed this phenomenon, I still find it un-fucking-believable.
From the Austin web blurb announcing the video take down:
The City of Austin will take down the video stream of the March 27, 2015 training (on dealing with women) …from its Web site at 5 pm today. The intent of this training was to reinforce the City’s commitment to diversity. Unfortunately, the training content was not consistent with the City’s culture, philosophy or management approach
The video will still be available upon request…
So many layers, it’s like origami … made of derp.
“Allen also reportedly said women would prefer to hear how implementations impact “the whole community” versus being shown the financial argument.” Well duh, that information is already in the packet. Community impacts are the most important part!
I hope this will be a really good council for Austin.
There is nothing about this presentation that is not offensive.
Yup. But I wonder if the speaker considered the restrained, mature behavior of all those “wimmen” demonstrated when confronted with his bullshit. Perhaps he has it wrong?
I’m a believer women should hold all leadership positions in the world. Can you imagine how much better this place would be? Austin is lucky it has that city council and it would be a shame to see it tainted with this assholes masculinity. After all, its the absence of what this guy is that’s going to make the Council a good one.
So women ask questions and want to explore how a policy will affect the entire community. Sounds good to me. I want to know why there are still three men on the council? Seems to me women are better at governing.
A state senate committee chair once told me that the working definition of an “expert” is someone who has been invited to come speak and who has traveled more than 50 miles to get there, and, if male, wears a suit and tie. She was only half-joking.
You left out Life Coaches. I actually laughed spontaneously once when someone, a stranger at my poker tournament table, told me with a straight face that he were a life coach. I don’t know how these people pull it off.
