I looked at Fallon schmoozing with Trump some days ago.
In treating Trump as (at worst) an “entertainer”, Fallon and others have dulled the blade of censure. And that is worse, in it’s own way (by misleading scores of millions of disengaged people) than any Huckabee hillbilly Teabagg gathering.
…and that it is not disgusting for the rest of the country is … no words for it. That it has become the norm rather than an exception is… no words for it.
I have spoken with a bunch of ex-students, as well as my own kids’ associates ranging from my ex-students’ ages to my kids’…and their reality is so different from ours. I wish we had had a Military Draft. That would have given some folks an edge…but I remember looking at a few of those kids asking questions to the Democratic candidates…
The CANDIDATES really can’t read the minds of these kids.
[As an aside…Bernie connects to kids better because of something kids DO respect: passion…but he can’t really read THEM like THEY can read HIM]
Months ago, I had suggested that the Democrats try to animate younger people the same way Madison Avenue does. I also suggested that Democrats use a descending cohort approach (people over 50 getting with people in their 40s, the latter with people in their 30s, those with people in their teens and 20s. etc.).
One can readily see why I am not in the Brain Trust of the Democrats…STILL…They gotta do something: Granny, Gramps, Cleetis and Goober ARE energized to vote BaggerRepub.
I have heartily agree with your intra-age conversations plan. We live in NWArkansas–( an island of blue in a sea of red) within walking distance of WaltonArtCenter, Theater Squared, a block from the University of Arkansas, within walking distance of a multitude of diverse restaurants, and one of our favorite places to go is the ‘local’ where young folks, middle age folks, UofA students/professors, and a few old farts gather. I wish there could be a convivial gathering of intra-age groups. Wish you could come join us… You , and many of the post-ers on TPM, would add a lot to the conversations.
As an aside on your aside: Some family was visiting last night, and we ended up watching most of the debate together. It was kind of a Mystery Science Theater vibe, and we were all having fun making fun of all three candidates for lots of silly little things – the way Bernie pronounces Russia as “rusher” and China as “chiner,” the way Hillary uses those “tiny hammers” hand gesture, and of course Martin O’Malley’s earnest but flaccid attempts to get an word in edgewise.
One niece watching with us (well, listening while texting or whatever she was doing on her phone) is about to vote in her first election, and she is not particularly partisan (her Mom, my sister, is a definite Hillary vote, her husband is an anyone-but-Hillary vote (though he wouldn’t be pinned down when I pointed out that meant he was saying he’d vote for Trump).
Anyway, my niece was having a great time making fun of Bernie’s Brooklyn accent and his crotchety old uncle persona, but when I asked her at the end who she thought had won, she said “Oh, ‘The Bern’ for sure,” I said “really, why?” kind of expecting her to mention the free public college tuition (an immediate issue for her) or legalization of pot, or the $15 minimum wage or maybe something emphasized in the debate, like health care… But she just said “Bernie says what he thinks, kinda like Trump, but not an asshole.” I told her I couldn’t really argue with that!
Haters are gonna hate. Whoever it’s permissible to hate, they’re down with it. It’s how they deal with trying not to hate their own failed selves. Which doesn’t make it any easier for their targets…
