Discussion: AOC On Manafort Sentencing: 'Justice Isn't Blind. It's Bought'

I don’t think she understands the full weight of her comments.

Bought, as in if one has money, he’s less likely to get the book thrown at him and seems to get second chances which increase in number.

But, worse, justice, in many cases, sees color and metes out punishment accordingly.

Really? What does she not understand?

That was snark, I’m sure.

These words are very blunt.

And also very accurate.

The only reason McConnell has allowed the Dotard to remain in office this long is so that he can pack the courts with RW judges. That’s the turtles only mission.

I was “quoting” Nancy Pelosi’s remark about Ilhan Omar …

A Black Dem Congressman charged with bribery got 13 years from the same judge.

Take a comparison of the Manafort case with another prosecution of a political figure, a Democratic Congressman from Louisiana named William J. Jefferson. I was a peripheral observer of that case. The FBI had raided Jefferson’s Congressional office and carried off his computer hard drive. The Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the violation of Congressional independence by that raid, and I was the principal witness (because I knew the established limits on prosecution tactics as a former House General Counsel and I was now a professor.)

Jefferson’s case basically hinged on charges of bribery. It was nationally famous because agents raiding his house found cash in the freezer.

Manafort may have gotten off easy with four years, but Ellis threw the book at Jefferson. In 2009 Ellis sentenced Jefferson to 13 years, the longest sentence of any Congressman to that date. (After further twists and turns Ellis let Jefferson off in December 2017 for five years time served.) It seems that while Judge Ellis can sympathize with Manafort, the Republican presidential campaign manager, he did not sympathize with Jefferson.

AOC is absolutely right. Let us not pretend. Follow the money.

Did AOC refer to Judge Ellis as being bought by Jewish money? More false equivalence from one of the Bernie Bros.

If you’re asking whether I thought you would get the joke …

I got the joke, and it would be fine, except your explanation, and your comments yesterday, suggest you don’t actually think it is a joke.

I didn’t realize that Ellis presided over the Jefferson case. Holy carp. He is so obviously partisan/racist. Is there any way to use these two cases to get him removed from the bench?

It was obviously a joke and @cervantes obviously thinks it was a joke. On top of that, it was hilarious, and this is from a guy that has tangled with @cervantes in the past.

Very unlikely.

Well, let’s ask him:

Cervie, do you think there’s a material difference between AOC’s comment and Omar’s?

What it comes down to is that the pepole with the most money can afford to hire the best lawyers, meaning the lawyers who tend to win lots and lots of cases.
I think this has probably been true ever since lawyers have argued cases before judges.

That’s part of it, I agree, but there’s more.

Just to take one example: Many people accused of being collaborators during WW2 (European and Pacific theaters) were prosecuted but many others were not. Of course the availability of evidence was a relevant factor; but there was also some correlation between (1) the decision not to even file charges and (2a) the social class of the accused; as well as (2b) the perceived continuing “usefulness” of the accused.
