They know what a MC is because they saw it when it first came out in theaters. And seriously, there’s no doubt about the racism aspect. But when have you ever, once, heard a wingnut speak approvingly of someone for being smart, knowledgeable, well-educated, or good at reasoning? Hardly ever in my experience. Those aren’t things they really value. And when they see it in opponents it freaks them out.

This story, and particularly the adroit way AOC handled it, reminds me of a confrontation I had with my English Teacher when I was a Freshman in High School. She confronted me one day about an Essay I had turned in. She wanted to know where I got it. I was confused at first- I had never been accused of plagiarizing before.

She threatened to give my paper an “F”. It was obviously plagiarized; no high school Freshman could write like that!

So I looked at her for a moment and I said:
“If you give me an F on this paper I’m going to take it and frame it. Because that’s the most sincere compliment I’ve ever gotten.”

I ended up being one of her favorite students. And she was one of my favorite teachers.

I never quite got Bob Hope. Sure he did his visit the troops shows but when the Oscars were delayed a week due to Dr. King’s assassination he just made some cornball jokes about the delay instead of making a serious, moving statement like other Hollywood luminaries such as Gregory Peck did.
