Discussion for article #238507
Which will be first?
A. Condemantion from Billo
B. Howls of pretend fury from Mr. Potato Head
C. A frivolous lawsuit
how did the Union Pacific logo garner center stage?
did AL believe the heraldry on the top that looks like Plantagenet claims to the throne of France would lend them some blueblood class?
Shouldn’t they remove the British flag as well?
Wow, this movement is REALLY picking up some serious steam. Yep, ditch both flags and add the good old U.S.A. flag.
A no-brainer but hey…it is Alabama! Bwahahaha!
This is a great time to update that clusterfuck of a symbol to be more in line with 'Murican values.
Replace the British flag (wtf?) and the Confederate flag with two more eagles. The fleur-de-lis (srsly wtf?) should also be replaced with an eagle. Whatever that quad-sector thing is with the rooks and Lannister lions - an eagle. Old-timey masted ship at the top definitely should be an eagle.
The central shield thing is vaguely American Flag-ish, so it can stay. But it should have a tiny eagle in the center.
Replace the two slightly Picasso-looking eagles on the right and left with American Fucking Eagles like this:
And finally get rid of that Latin bullshit at the bottom and replace it with
SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED
Boom, done. Y’all can have that idea for free; no royalties.
I object. That eagle is neither shooting lasers from its eyes, or is it firing missiles.
Again, this goes too far. The patch represents the five governments that have held sovereignty over Alabama in their history. It would be ridiculous to remove just the confederate flag and leave the other four flags. In one patch they sum up the history of Alabama. I think it is actually well-designed and respectful. Again, along with the Stone Mountain thing, this has stepped from the respectful removal of symbols of a societal ill, to attempts to erase history. By all means, get rid of every battle flag you can find flying on government property. But you can’t have a seal with only four governments, it has to have all five, or else it is revisionist. Like it or not, the state of Alabama was in fact governed by the Confederacy for a few short years. You cannot erase that.
Giant flag with the Alabama seal on it?
why not get rid of the whole damned thing and just go with the state seal? the coat of arms was only adopted in 1939
if they used a swastika since 1939 i’m sure we could agree it shouldn’t be used, yes?
“Removing the Confederate flag from the [Alabama Law Enforcement] Agency’s emblem would convey a resounding message….”
The governor could easily replace it with something more fitting to the true character of Dixie.
Like poker-playing dogs.
On velvet.
I have always loved dominoes —
I’m thinking more like a trailer park meth lab and a couple Duck Dynasty lookalikes.
But what do I know. I’ve only been to Alabama a couple hundred times.
why these things shouldn’t be allowed to slide http://www.salon.com/2015/07/14/lets_make_the_south_stop_lying_the_rights_war_on_our_history_and_truth_must_be_defeated_now/
What the hell? It’s the 21’st century and the Union Jack hasn’t flown this country in over 200 years. Has the Union Jack ever flown over Alabama? Such a crazy emblem.
and it’s not even the right union jack. that particular flag never flew over alabama.
OK, so in this bastardization, we have:
-The British Union Jack
-The Confederate Battle Flag of the Army of Virginia
-The French Imperial Flag (Kingdom of France from 14th - 16th Century)
-The Castille and Leon Flag (Spanish Kingdoms)
Hmmmmmm… I suppose they want to honor everyone who ruled over the geography of their state that’s not the actual United States? I hope with their official State Coat of Arms they didn’t convert to Freedom Fries during the Iraq War… they’re flying the banner, why not call them French Fries?
EDIT: Using my power of the internets, the Latin inscription indicates “We Dare Defend [Maintain] our Rights”. With the shield of the US. I suppose it could be intended as showing defense of rights by the US against those who had attempted to take them away symbolized by the other flags, but it’s a stretch. Symbolism being what it is, what would people feel if it’s meant to represent the dominance of the US over the attempted Confederacy?
here’s some fun info on the piece of work behind the alabama coat of arms and state motto “We Dare to Defend our Rights”: Marie Bankhead Owen. She was actively opposed to a Federal mandate giving women the right to vote, and believed in the supremacy of the white race.
People in the /south keep telling us that the stars and bars is not the real confederate flag but just a battle flag. Therefore, it was not the flag of the government of the confederacy. Why is that flag ion the patch if it wasn’t one of the five governments that ruled Alabama?
My vote is for the plain white flag used to denote the supremacy of the white race. As abominable as that is, at least it isn’t immediately recognizable (and is more likely to be mistaken for a flag of surrender).
Using a coat of arms designed by an anti-suffrage white supremacist still in 2015 is astounding. Walking down the streets with a confederate battle flag on your chest and expecting the people who rightly find that symbol a disgusting reminder of the wrongs perpetrated on their ancestors in the not-very-distant past and even on themselves to this day to respect your authority? Makes me feel seriously sorry for any Alabama police officers. Well, more so than I already was.
