Discussion: Another Ohio Rep. Is 'Furious' By Mt. McKinley Name Change

As Hillary once famously said of the Shrub Admin, “They’re trying to turn back the clock, all the way to the McKinley administration”. They got damn close to that: Gilded Age Lazziez-Faire. Their hero is St. Ronnie, it’s McKinley (admittedly most are so ignorant of history and policy they don’t know it), but I’m not surprised an Ohio GOP is butthurt. He should be one of our most reviled presidents: “Hard Money” (Gold Standard) and an unrepentant advocate for the Economic Aristocracy - McKinley was a 1%er’s dream - way beyond anything Mittens could ever aspire to.

If the people and politicians of Ohio want something named after President McKinley, then name something in Ohio.

Hey Ohio: Leave Alaska alone.

There must be some large sinkhole somewhere in Ohio to name for McKinley. A sinkhole – because it’s not there!.

Better call the whaaaambulance – that level of furiousness is not healthy and can lead to strokes.

TPM:

Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) is angry at President Barack Obama’s decision to revert Mt. McKinley to its Alaska Native name.

Wait till Turner finds out that the President has also used his executive authority to change Turner’s name to Fuckwit McDickhead.

(Yes, I am immature.)

This is rich…the party that talks about small local government and the people representing themselves is angry because the president respected the wishes of the local people of Alaska and change the name of a mountain there back to what they call it. Only in today’s rage-politics against anything Obama would anyone see this as a big deal or a bad thing. I can’t wait until the day that the Republican party grows up, or breaks up, and this childish nonsense stops.

If you’re so outraged by it, rename something prominent in Ohio in his honor. Don’t be surprised, though, if you get people asking questions such as “Who was McKinley?”.

I’ve climbed a couple of the summits of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire’s White Mountains (Mount Washington, Mount Adams), and it seems perfectly fitting that they have those names. Presumably there were native american names for those peaks before whites drove the native people out; still, for whatever reason no one is using the earlier names. In the case of the White Mountains, most likely some of the presidents had seen the mountains being named after them, or at least they were all from the same part of the country. The McKinley designation is much more artificial, and is not in common use among those who live near Denali.

This doesn’t reflect well on Ohio. The notion that citizens are ‘furious’ because the name of a mountain thousands of miles away will revert to its original name is truly mind boggling. Ohioans must possess really low self esteem if they can get emotionally upset over this. As a resident of California I would welcome the opportunity rename all those “Reagan” buildings and airports after President McKinley so we can put those poor Ohio souls out of their misery…

Can’t we just smooth this whole thing over by keeping the name “Mount McKinley” for the mountain, but renaming Cleveland “Palinville?” That seems fair…

Now that would be fun, especially because McKinley came from that part of the state. Even though the late President was born in the Western Reserve, he was not born into one of the original Western Reserve families. The descendants of those families are known for their strongly voiced opinion that they are far, far superior to anyone else. Get out the popcorn.

I’m only now beginning to understand the subtlety of this epic trolling.

What Obama’s done here is pushed their “this is a white man’s country!” button in a way that even they don’t quite recognize. They’re all like “dammit! White people renamed that mountain after a white man, divesting of its heathen savage name, and you want to undo that? It’s stealing, that’s what it is!”

Dear Knucklehead.

The President is not obligated to consult with the Ohio delegation about the name of a mountain in Alaska. The government and people of the great state of Alaska have been petitioning for the name change for 40 years, while the knucklehead Ohio delegation have blocked the will of the people with frivolous manipulation of the intent of the law.

Go suck it.

Very truly yours,
Everybody with a brain

Yeah, but the Alaskans who wanted it changed back to the native name aren’t white, they’re Native American. The idea that some uppity minority can overturn the will of old white guys is what pisses the GOP off.

What is the big deal? I don’t think that former President, William Denali McKinley would care at all.

McKinley’s great great grandkids, Fairbanks, Juneau and Kenai are a bit worried though.

Juneau the capital of Alaska?

Being a NC resident I really find it hilarious that folks from Ohio are so upset that a landmark in another state that was named for someone from Ohio is getting changed. Especially since they got so pissed and wanted NC to remove the motto “First In Flight” from their license plates. They didn’t so they put the motto “Birthplace Of Aviation” on theirs.
