Discussion: Another Court Rejects Walker’s Bid To Block Special Elections

Can’t this new law be challenged?

Look up “lowlife” in the dictionary and you’ll see Scott Walker’s picture.

It strikes me that the Rethuglicans are making sure that they NEVER win those seats again. NEVER, EVER.

Judge Reilly is a Republican.

I really don’t understand why TPM never tells us. It’s a particularly important piece of information in states where judges are elected, like WI…and they can call it a “nonpartisan” election all they want, but everyone knows what team the candidates are on. Where it’s by appointment, we should always be told who appointed them too.

Won’t be much, but I’ll sure be sending WI Dems some campaign cash – as I’m sure millions of others will be doing the same.

edited spelling.

The ‘new law’ doesn’t exist yet. The lege will have to meet in a special session next week to pass it. And that’s assuming the WI Supreme Court reverses the lower courts and gives Walker until the end of next week to call for special elections – by then the ‘new law’ would be in effect.

If necessaary, the ‘new law’ would be challenged, but the GOP would set up more roadblocks to stall until August, by which time it’ll be too late for special elections

Probably by specifically and directly addressing it in a special provision.

Here in Michigan, Gov. Snyder, all on his own, has denied former Rep. Conyers’s district from holding a special election. He resigned in wake of sexual harassment allegations last December. He also was the longest serving House Rep. in Congress.

It will be 11 months before another officeholder is determined and can take his/her seat in January with the next Congress. In the meantime, Snyder is forcing his seat to remain vacant for no apparent reason. This refusal to hold special elections and deny people their constitutional right to representation has become a very Republican thing to do these days. Why? Because for most of these GOPers, they consider any legislator who might get elected to serve the other party, from being allowed to do so, even if they have to change the rules midstream to prevent that from happening.

You don’t get to hold elections only when you think you’ll win them, dipshit.

It’s nice to see the WI-GOP on the defensive.

Never forget. Always remind them. Forever. Until this and other issues are rectified, going forward, I support winning (against Republicans) by whatever means it takes. Until we are afforded that SCOTUS seat as well as other federal court appointments and gerrymandering is long past, I support cutting their throats while they sleep to win our rightful seats. Politically speaking, of course.

ANSWER–David Koch out exercising his pet.
QUESTION–Who is Scottie Walker?

Even if Walker relents, call the elections and Ds win, it won’t change the balance of power in the WI legislature. Rs will still be in control. I believe their thinking is if they call the elections now and Ds win, it will be even harder to win those seats back in November. They’re betting they have a better chance in November without Ds entrenched in those seats. It won’t matter in the end. I believe Ds will take back WI and restore democracy to the state.

Well, we all asked that same question when he got caught red-handed violating state election laws. Because this is exactly what he did then. He changed the law. Then, when he god sued, he took that to the state supreme court. The majority of that court had taken millions of dollars from the same entities involved in the case, but they ruled Walker had done nothing wrong. Easy peasy!

It’s becoming blindingly clear with every passing day (this, the Conyers seat, the immigration question, and that’s just, what three days) that the ONLY way the GOP can retain power is through cheating. I wish more Democrats would speak to this issue directly. Use the word. The GOP/Fox screamers certainly would - and do.

The WI supreme court has a well earned reputation for partisan hackery, but it will be interesting to see if they are ready to allow retroactive legislation in a matter like this.

I sure hope so, WI has suffered way too long and I say that from someone who observes from afar, can’t imagine my fury if I lived there. We have similar issues with our Gov in KY but he hasn’t been there as long and we’ve got an excellent chance of voting him out in '19.
