Discussion: Alberto Gonzales Defends Trump On Judge Smear: He Has 'Right To A Fair Trial’

My dog can - consistently upon request - ‘high-five’ … and on that basis alone, I can safely conclude that my dog has a better brain than Alberto Gonzales.

This is really the key point. It is not that Curiel has prejudice against Trump, it is that Trump is prejudiced against jLatinos and wants to be able to pick the judge on that basis. Even if there were some marginally plausible pretext for recusal, Curiel would be foolish to recuse, as everyone under the sun would know that it was a recusal in deference to Trump’s racism. That would be a horrible precedent, and I have no idea why Gonzales does not recognize this.

I have no doubt that Cruz’s academic credentials and test scores were impeccable. Sadly, there’s no reliable way to weed out the raging assholes.

Gonzales? Yeah, no idea where that came from. Turns out, he had excellent academic credentials as well. Perspiration over inspiration.

Out of every Attorney General in US history, Al is the only one who COULDN’T GET A JOB RIGHT AWAY AFTER BEING THE NATION’S TOP COP. The only damn one and he was the 80th AG of the United States.

Legal firms shunned him as if he had leprosy. He finally got a job working on patents a year after he quit and it was a temp job. Al never found a publisher for the ‘explanation’ of his role in the U.S. Attorney firings and other controversies that happened under the Second Bush Administration that he wanted to write for his sons. Four years after he quit, a law firm in Nashville finally hired him. Four fucking years.

So I really wouldn’t give much weight to his legal opinions.

Under Alberto Gonzales’ Department of Civil Rights Division within the DoJ, the entire division was severely compromised and left without adequate investigators. From a NYT article written in 2010 assessing the damage:

Nearly 70 percent of the lawyers had left between 2003 and 2007, a mass exodus that came during allegations the Bush administration was politicizing hiring. Internal watchdogs concluded that the division’s former head had refused to hire lawyers he labeled “commies” and had transferred one for allegedly writing in “ebonics,” allegations the official denied. Civil rights groups said the unit had lost its traditional civil rights focus.

Alberto became AG in 2005. What did he do to address or remedy the problem at the time? Bupkis. Because Republicans like things they don’t like not to work as they should. It gives them a handy excuse to blame government in some way, shift blame, decimate what they can’t stand even further, and set it on a path for extinction when all else fails. And civil rights under the Bush Administration just happens to be one of those things. They couldn’t stand addressing the issue EVER, and they just pretended it didn’t exist as a problem.

that’s some weak tea…

Sorry Gonzo, but there’s not going to be a Trump administration for you to get appointed to…

seriously. you would think an attorney general would understand the precedent he is advocating for. Also, this is such a slap in the face to Curiel. The man has impeccable credentials, and in Trump and Gonzalez’s world, people with impeccable credentials cannot seperate personal feelings from proffesional responsibility. This is out of control.

I can’t claim authorship. That’s by Matt Ford from The Atlantic. The full article is worth the read.

Have a problem talking this dumbass seriously. Every ethnic group can object to a judge if he is not of the same ethnicity as the defendant. Chaos!!! Gonzales never struck me as someone who had a serious capability in the field of law. He was Bush’s tool. If you followed his idea the Courts will come to a stop as defendants get to choose who judges them. Ridiculous. This guy must have a lot of time on his hands. The Post has money to burn.

“he’s rich…” Gonzales continued. “I mean, c’mon. Rich people don’t go to jail. Where’s the fairness in that?”

Donald Trump only considers a trial “fair” if it’s biased in his favor for the outcome. That’s the real problem.
And the trials usually are because he can spend so much on lawyers.

Mr. Gonzales has a right to a fair trial as well, for criminal violations of both US & International law. when will he be extradited to the Haig, to face his accusers? Christ, what an embarrassment to the legal profession!

if Trump’s attorney thought there was a legitimate chance of the judge being forced to recuse himself, he’d have already filed that request, he hasn’t. what Trump thinks is pretty much irrelevant, unless he has something substantive to support it with, and just having a big mouth doesn’t count.
