I wonder about the extent to which derision and bigotry against the south affects voter turnout. I was born and raised in Alabama and I have lurked here for years. I was raised with and strongly resent the hyperconservative, hyperreligious bent of this state. However, it is my home and I am unlikely to leave. I think that the consistent criticisms of my state have ample justification, but the generalizations about our populace smack of bigotry. Painting any large group as homogenous is generally myopic and, in this case, counterproductive. To this day, I have never voted in a midterm election because of my belief that my liberal vote is not relevant in Alabama. I can’t directly account for this bias, but I doubt many of you would believe differently if you had my experiences. I did vote for Jones and believe that it is much better to reinforce people like me instead of making a joke or backhanded compliment about how Alabama didnt f it up. If the current wave of authoritarianism is going to be met with true force, people like me must be convinced that our votes matter.

This wasn’t done by “the police.” This was done by a bad actor (with peers!) whose behavior does not warrant overgeneralization. This needs to be rectified, but reason and measure are important.

Is the new guy going to be just as corrupt as the old guy? That is an open question given that the only race we are going to see was in the Republican primary. It is about damn time the Democratic party stood up in the South and started holding Republicans accountable.
