Discussion for article #227659
Wait wait wait… AQAP’s master bomb-maker is working on developing designs for bombs that detonate successfully?
I just can’t see what drives these extremists and fanatics to the extent of pursuing plots for decades like this.
They must have miserable personal lives, and suffer from some obvious disorder in their relations with the other sex. I recall Mohammed Atta would not permit any woman at his funeral.
This is why we must continue with the targeted drone strikes. These people got a taste of success because of the Bush administration’s incompetence … we must deny them any more successes while we eliminate their technical and organizational leaders. Wherever there are governmental voids (Somalia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria) they will thrive. Those conservatives who hate ‘nation building’ may as well sign up for Al Qeida membership, they are a prime reason these vermin have safe havens to work from.
Couldn’t agree more. Remember Bush stated point blank he had no interest in capturing OBL. He was too busying lying his way into a war!
This is similar to a bunch of teabag republicans.
The situation for everyone, including the US, will only worsen if the Assad government is overthrown, as our administration seems to want. Shunning open cooperation with Iran over the common threat that Sunni extremism represents to both of our interests, because it would offend neocon-deranged politicians and interest groups in the US, is dangerously shortsighted.
People want boots on the ground against ISIS/ISIL, and now these al Qaeda groups in Syria. Hezbollah is already there and fighting in support of Assad’s Shia-friendly government, as well as to keep the radical Sunni groups out of Lebanon. Let’s make it easyer for Iran to replenish and resupply those fighters who actually fight, instead of putting practical and political roadblocks in Iran’s way.
If the Assad government falls, then ISIS/ISIL and the al Qaeda groups mentioned in this article are cheek-by-jowl with Israel. Perhaps our strongest ally and partner in the region can devote some military attention to the impending threat near its own border? I realize that long-standing Likud policy is to break Syria apart into irreconcilable factions as was successfully accomplished in Iraq, but surely Israel’s leaders and planners must realize that if Syria and adjacent Lebanon fall to Sunni extremists, the short-term advantages Israel would gain by destruction of Hezbollah and territorial expansion into former Lebanon/Syria to restore the borders of David’s kingdom, would be Pyrrhic against an existential threat that is not just rhetorical.
PDB August 6, 2001: Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US – No interest from the get go… now the far left want to do the very same thing. Counter-terrorism is not a war, anymore than the so called war on drugs is… it’s just vigilance.
Terrorism in the 21st century has been dominated by Wahabbi sunnis. The Taliban, Lashkar-el-Taibi, Al Qaeda, Alah-Shahab, Boko-Haram, the list goes on. Sunni terrorism has proven to be a medusa headed monster that will morph and spawn one savage and barbaric group after another.
We have to use a comprehensive approach and take on Sunni and Wahabbi geopolitical and economic interests with a smart strategy and the same determination that we used against the Communists and the Nazis. It is not going to be easy but if it is not done we will be playing whack-a-mole with more and more Wahabbi Sunni terrorist groups.
