Discussion: After Trump Says ‘Buy L.L. Bean’, Ethics Office Issues Reminder On Endorsements

This was already hashed out yesterday, you need to update.

LLB already distanced itself from this one heir, and disavowed any Trump support. AFTER that Trump did the tweet you included, which does NOT point to LL Bean (@LLBean), but to this LLB heir’s lobster business (@LBPerfectMaine).

Little screw you to LLB for not loving him enough.

Slate has an article saying it’s cool, no problemo. Which I’m glad about because I’ve been eyeing those Cresta hikers for a while now.

Link to LL Bean actually repudiating the Trump* endorsement?

I am happy that President Trump is endorsing – it is Very Becoming of the Office. George Bush endorsed Wars and Torture, which ordinary people can’t use. President Trump is endorsing things like Lobster that Real Americans care about.

He also endorsed The Paris Hilton video, which made Paris, France, the capital of France and a tourist destination, the Paris Hilton a sought after hotel for sexual liaisons and Ms. Paris Hilton, a sex symbol and billionaire.

I know He is very Smart and like Bob McDonnell, He has endorsed Forced Vaginal Probing. However, my humble suggestion of things He should Not Endorse include Cigarettes, Rectal Exams, Cancer, Parasites, Santorum and Cockroaches.

President Trump should be endorsing more products especially from Da Folks that are making Donations to His Family and to the Tramp Foundation over and over. Also, He should be endorsing Trump Towers and Tic-Tacs and other products that enable Trump to Grab 'em and Grope 'em. Also, tax evasion software would be another hot item.

This is very similar to what the warrants the Queens, Princesses and Royalty in England do.

Winners give out more endorsements and more Tweets. Ethics and standards are for Losers. However, I am surprised that the Winner Donald Trump would endorse a company with not one but Two frigging Loser Ls in its name. Ls are for Losers.

Buy used on eBay. Even though I don’t need to, I find that shirts and sweaters are a great deal on eBay. Shoes and boots are harder, because of sizing differences between manufacturers. But I do that too, and just resell if I don’t like them. But used is the environmentally sound choice for me.

Here’s the link:

But there’s also this (h/t @irasdad)

L.L. Bean has been officially inducted in the International Labor Rights Forum’s 2010 Sweatshop Hall of Fame. This list includes apparel and textile companies that use sweatshops in their global production, tend to evade fair labor standards and are slow to respond to improving working conditions. Most of the companies employ laborers who work in dangerous conditions and for long hours for poverty wages. Many of 2010’s inductees also use child labor and suppress worker’s rights to organize. Other inductees along L.L. Bean include Abercrombie and Fitch, Gymboree, Hanes, Ikea, Kohl’s, Pier 1 Imports and Walmart.

The opinion piece in Slate, by Ms. L.V. Anderson, is just that. It says two things: “Most business people contribute to Trump, so get over it” (wrong), and, second, “Don’t let conservatives be the only ones who have access to the Bean’s aesthetic.” Now that’s a powerful argument, I’ll have to admit. I mean, you know, multicolor pants with whales. We must save these for the Progressives.
Bottom line is that the profits of the Beans empire are going to people who fiance Trump, Rubio, and other arch conservatives. They have every right to donate to those politicians. And I have every right to never buy from Beans until Beans repudiates Trump’s endorsement.

There was a tweet, but here is their FB post:

Ok, I read it. Actually I read it before. It is NOT a repudiation of Trump’s endorsement. It says, “We’re not political, leave us alone, please!” That horse is out of the barn. They are most definitely political… Linda Bean has seen to that. And even the CEO has been lavish with his gifts to the GOP.

Yup. I was suitably unimpressed, too. (Just supplying the link. T’wasn’t an endorsement.)

What a buffoon…this is why we like our elected officials to have a modicum of experience.

Family held businesses are freaking conflict nightmares. Trump will learn that, too.

Boycott LL Bean.

I, too, need to see the source of that information. But even if that’s the case, I am old enough to remember The Nazifrog PeePee “disavowed the white supremacists” as if that meant anything much. I need to see actions – need to see Linda Bean removed from the board and the company clearly disavowing the PeePee shoutout before ever considering shopping with them again.

It’s not about people there personally supporting particular candidates or parties – there are actual legal and ethical violations involved in this Bean’s case.

Edit: OK, now I see you meant that FB post. No, that’s no repudiation.

We hafta remember that trump has zero understanding of ethics as it relates to politics. He has NO political experience. He does not understand how the system works. He thinks in CEO style leadership which is not how a President operates.
Even so if he said “Buy gold” I’d buy food.

I understand that his sycophants on his transition team have no idea what they’re doing, but where in effing hell is Reince Preibus, and how much influence does he apparently not have?

Dangerous dumbasses.

Edit: And why am I not surprised?!
