What a wedge issue this would be.
It will fail to pass. They Republicans dirty little secret is that the don’t want terrorism stopped. Terrorism causes fear in the base, and when there base is afraid, they vote.
Can you imagine how this would put the Republicans in knots?
Despite the urgency of preventing certain people from obtaining guns, the Republicans would be forced to defend their support for unlimited access to high-powered weapons.
This guy has become a fawning jerkoff. The "no-fly list’ is well known to contain so many errors, problems with justifications and just plain politics that it is worthless as any deterrent. You and I could be on this list for any number of reasons, and mostly no legitimate reason at all. However, this jerkoff is capitalizing with his PC big mouth like most of these horrible losers in congress. Remember this is the guy who supported Netanyahu’s sickening address to congress.
All they have to do is wait three weeks, four weeks at the most, and this will be forgotten by all but the most vocal. The media will soon move back to the Fascist vs. Hillary horse race.
How can you stop people on the No-Fly list from buying guns when nobody is allowed to say who is on the No-Fly list and there’s no way to appeal being on it?
This is common sense, so count on the GOP to be against it.
I’m sorry, but if innocent babies being slaughtered in their own classrooms isn’t enough, the unspeakable tragedy in Orlando is not going to move the needle. These people have no conscience.
So where would you start?
Advocates for gays will not forget this in three weeks, or allow anyone else to forget.
I worry about the due process aspects of the legislation, but I think they could be handled. Politically this could be a winner. Of course, this legislation would only deal with part of the universe of mass shooters.
So maybe we need to first work to fix the no fly list and make the process more transparent and fair. Then when we’ve done that we bar people on the list from purchasing new firearms?
Seems like a double edged sword either way. If one is on the no-fly list, or under terrorism investigation, won’t being denied legal purchase of firearms tip the terrorist off that they are under suspicion? Could this have a negative effect on stopping terrorists? Presumably, the gun store owner won’t have the info at their fingertips and be able to say “sorry I can’t sell to you, says here you’re on the no fly list/you’re under investigation for ties to terrorism.”
Considering how easy it is to get guns illegally in this country, I doubt this would deter a terrorist, it would just drive them underground. And if they had accomplices they’d be tipped off. All the while, you wouldn’t have enough evidence to charge them with anything.
We won’t forget, but nearly everyone else will. Tragically, if Newtown can be forgotten, this will as well. I want to believe that this time is different but…
And watch Republicans decide the deaths of 50 gays isn’t so bad after all.
Why do you refer to yourself in the third person?
Perhaps, but the killer in the first case was a white dude and the second a muslim dude. That may make a difference (but probably not).
