Discussion: After Glaring Omission In Brussels, Trump Commits To NATO's Article 5

Is it just me or does this read as though someone said, “say this” but he has no idea what it means…?

Is this playing with Article 5 a negotiating tactic to scare NATO members into “paying up,” or in more neutral terms, increase their defense spending? That interp could fit the Trump self-image as a deal-maker.

I have it on very good authority that Mr Trump is “an untrustworthy liar”.

Every time I hear Trump speak I expect to see Willy Wonka step out from behind a chocolate bush, blow his whistle and say something pithy…Donnie is a human cartoon…a dangerous one that is not funny.

That awkward moment when you realize Romania has only met 75% of its NATO obligations while standing next to the Romanian President Klaus Werner for a press conference.

Another shining moment for United States diplomacy.

Too late, the damage to NATO is done. Just as Putin ordered.
Meanwhile, so-called, national security Republicans have nothing to say about it.

After repeatedly stepping on his own d##k in golf shoes, Trump finally does what he should have done at the outset. And, in typical fashion, he created chaos among our allies and weakened NATO in the process. Great job!

George Marshall is rolling over in his grave.

Dear Donnie, can you name any of the previous Americans to run NATO? Just pick one.

But yes, absolutely, I would be committed to Article 5.

So Mattis and McMaster and everybody in the defense community tells them that making the pledge is imperative, and he mealy-mouths it into the subjunctive.

This shtick of his is getting old. Find an important pledge viewed as vital by another country, offend against it and then expect gratitude in return when he backs down.

He tried it with Taiwan and China, armed protection in Korea, nuclear weaponry and Japan.

Usually he wants them to spend more on arms.

Why he thinks the rest of the world having more weaponry makes us safer is unclear.

Some Trump supporters claim Trump’s refusal to embrace Article 5 in Brussels was great strategy because, even though it sowed distrust among our allies, it put them on notice that they need to step up their military defense game.

Get that? He didn’t do it because it would sow distrust, he did it even though it would sow distrust – because the resulting uncertainty would be to our benefit… bigly.

So how long did that valuable uncertainty last? About two weeks. He embraced Article 5 today.

And how long will the distrust linger? Who knows…

What Trump commits to today means nothing tomorrow.

Perhaps we can say that the corrupt imbecile’s timing was a little “off.” Everyone will remember the shocking omission in Brussels rather than this “I’m saying it because I’m being told to say it this time,” half-assed response. He is still loathe to criticize Putin and Russia.

Republicans consider the US to be the world’s policeman.

Conservatives used to mock liberals for having that idea, but conservatism has gone so far to the right, it’s now looping around and turning into liberalism.

World cop? Enforcer of correct religious morality? Gyno guards? Commie lovers?

Heck, next thing you know they’ll proclaim a new government health care plan that’ll cost you more or something.

Uh, Dear NATO: You / we are safe now. The president has made you a promise and it will join a long list of other promises he’s kept.

“I’m going to be so presidential, you’re going to be so bored.”
“I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.” (So far, 24 golf trips.)
[I will] direct the secretary of the treasury to label China a currency manipulator.
[I will] ensure the country has “absolutely crystal clear and clean water” and “beautiful, immaculate air.” (… Trump says as EPA is dismantled.)
“We will start winning again and winning like you’ve never seen before.”

Great point. Screw the record of who visits the White House. Obviously, we need an official record of his golfing and Mar a Lago dining partners.
