As of yet (I certainly don’t know many details yet) we don;t know if the cause of this is a temporary or a permanent problem.
I have close personal experience with each of the categories of death you mention, unfortunately. Even so it has not yet made me so bitter and full of hate that I respond with a generalized (and unfounded) denouncing of the person because they died. I don’t know all the details of what went down and why. So I am of a mind to withhold judgement until I know more. There are as many reasons for suicide as there are people.
Clicked refresh from earlier today and literally gasped and welled up… what an amazing talent who left us with so many happy memories.
Met Robin in the street while I was at Berkeley many (many!) years ago and he was on his way to the Greek theatre for the annual Bread and Roses festival. He stopped and talked with me for several minutes and was as delightful a person as one could imagine.
RIP, Robin - you will be well and truly missed here on Earth!
Its always been one of the prices for genius. Add to that a looking at the world in a completely different way makes it even harder to fit in.
I agree. I also agree with the content of that column. Especially the part that points out that increased research and treatment is necessary. I just returned from a symposium on mental health. I was so impressed with the great strides that have been made in the mental health area. This news today brings home to me that, no matter the progress, more work needs to be done.
Well, one of the many problems with a bipolar disorder is it gets harder and harder to treat with age, as you build up tolerances to the drugs used to treat it rather quickly. Eventually they start running out of prescriptions that you aren’t building up tolerances. Add to that his history of self medicating, and that had to exasperate the problem.
I weep.

FOR.EVER.
According to TMZ, Williams voluntarily entered Hazelden (MN) on July 1st. He may have had a private shrink who earlier prescribed anti-depressants, but he wouldn’t have gotten them or been permitted them at Hazelden. I went there myself in 1989, and they didn’t even allow us to have caffeinated coffee, much less prescription drugs. Some guys would drink a cup of tea with 5 bags in it just to wake up.
So, so sad. A multi-talented individual who could do anything he wanted to, and usually did. His episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio is not only one of the funniest pieces of television ever (as well as the best ep of that series), but you really got to see how much thought and training went into his work.
A massive loss. Drive home safely, Robin. You will be mourned and missed.
I remember that one of his running partners in the early days was John Belushi, who left us way too early. Robin’s said many times that it could have easily been him in that hotel room (or wherever it might have happened), his drug use was that bad. Thankfully, we had Robin for 40 more years, so we should count our blessings, I guess, as hard as it seems right now…
I’m so glad the mods nuked this asshole. I am both not in the mood and TOTALLY in the mood to flatten a nice piece of troll breath.
And sometimes it’s that pain that “hurts someone into poetry.”
Sleep easy, and may the demons shut up.
You are making a ton of assumptions based on zero actual personal knowledge. Did you know Robin? Were you an acquaintance? You seem to be speaking for everyone in the entertainment industry and that’s a heavy responsibility. Are you up to it? Or is your information out of a grocery store tabloid or maybe a certain part of your anatomy. Lastly, I’m remembering a quote from long ago: “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone”. So Sandman, how is your conscience? Free and clean and without blemish?
As far as I can tell he isn’t banned. Just the recent comments on this thread have been flagged and removed.
Oh, that’s so nice, thanks. But here’s what Robin actually said in reply without missing a beat.
There’s seating near the front. The concert begins at five. It’ll be Mozart, Elvis, and anyone of your choosing.
Or, or just a nice, if heaven exists, to know that there’s laughter. That would be a good thing. Just to hear God goes, “Two Jews walk into a bar

Robin Williams on Inside The Actors Studio with pink scarf.
If anyone was ever going to burn out, it was Robin. In Robin years, he was about 150.
I think that I can feel his pain.
RIP
Anyone remember that Jon Stewart episode where Stewart mocked Glenn Beck using the chalkboard with Beck’s silly Obama conspiracies? Robin Williams was on Stewart soon after and thanked Stewart for doing what he does. Keeping the sanity in the politico world.
