Discussion: ACLU Soul-Searches Amid Backlash For Defending Hate Groups In C'ville March

just thinking…

I don’t fault the ACLU for defending the Alt-Right protest, but I think they shouldn’t have been allowed to march through Charlottesville on Friday. If you keep protesters confined to one stop I thought you’d have better control. Now what we learned in Ferguson, MO is that once you start marching you can’t stop marching is unconstitutional, but making them stay in one place is not.

If PETA had a march and one of their members too it upon themselves to run meat eaters over, you wouldn’t hold that as the group’s fault would you. Publicly the white groups don’t promote violence even though I’m sure a lot of their members do privately and some do publically. But I’d be willing to bet that some PETA members do, although probably a lot smaller percentage than with the white groups. A tough decision and a very fine line.

Like any organization, the ACLU has limited resources and must make choices as to how to allocate those limited resources.

Is this really the best use of those limited resources? Defending the right to peacefully protest is one thing; defending hate is quite another. I won’t donate any of my limited resources to any organization that stands with those who hate.

This is not a blurry line and the ACLU knew exactly who they were getting in bed with.

There is such a thing as being so open-minded that the tumbleweeds blow in and take over.
