This historian posted a terrific thread on this flag and the racists behind it.
Glad to see a D not automatically apologizing.
The headline of the TPM - AP article implies she personally burned this [stupid, racist] flag, but as I understand it she attended a rally where this occurred. While I see nothing wrong at all about burning this Georgia state flag, I do object to the headline of this article which misstates her role at this rally. The headline is intended to inflame those who could be inflamed by this.
Stay strong, Stacy! Turn this into a discussion about white supremacists and their behavior in the 1950s!
Read the article again, she clearly states, SHE burned the flag. Good on Stacy!
The closer we get to Election Day, the more you can count on the good old NYT to try to sabotage the campaign of a strong Democratic candidate.
Already cast my vote (proudly) for Stacey Abrams! Too late to change my mind!
Young GA will embrace her for doing this and not apologizing. Old (white) GA wasnât going to vote for her anyway. Suburban, Indie GA will lean in her direction. This kinda, sorta plays well for her given that she is keeping up the turnout game.
So she is accused of burning a flag that was so embarrassing that they donât have it any more. Is that all you got? Was the picked up for littering, too?
â,the accompanying photo identifies Abrams as a woman standing with her arms crossed, watching three other protesters burn the flag.â
She is identified as the burner only in the headlines, which are notoriously inaccurate at TPM.
Well, good on her either way.
Nowhere in either the TPM posted piece nor the actual Atlanta article does it say she burned the flag. She participated in the demonstration, and the Atlanta piece nskes her in the photo caption, but clearly sheâs in the background (it does not name the man on the right). Good on her either way, but there is no copy that sets she actually burned the flag. Not that the Georgia racists would care.
She participated in a protest there the racist flag was burned. A flag that deserved to burned, and is now not the state flag. Note the flag was changed in the same time frame that âunder godâ was added to the pledge to the flag. Yeah, good times!
Good for her. It was an American flag defaced by a base symbol of treason against our Constitutional republic. It was an act of patriotism to burn it. She has nothing to be sorry for and a lot be to proud of.
The GOP is trying to swift boat her like they did Kerry. Watch them trot out a bunch of white conservative officials from that period who will swear on their bibles and the 2nd Amendment that they saw her strike the match.
As far as I concerned she can light the flag that Trump is wrapped in.
Nor should she be.
I donât know if it will hurt her in GA, but thatâs exactly how I feel too.
Tonight Ms. Abrams should be ready for her opponent on this issue and when âconfrontedâ about it she should calmly bring a cross (a strong, perhaps the strongest, Christian symbol) up from behind her podium and quietly ask her opponent how he feels about the countless crosses that were burned on Black lawns and in front of Black churches by the very people who are now so insulted by having the confederate flag burned in answer. Where was his voice then?
Even as a Civil War historian and member of a number of Civil War organizations,I defend her right to free speech and peaceful protest. Thanks to others who noted the factual inaccurcies in the TPM article too. I hope she wins.
