So, you are saying every last person showing up at the border is a "lying, thieving, sick, lazy, and otherwise useless person?. Well that is interesting since as you say they’re finding $30 to $60 billion to send back home. Not bad for lying, thieving, sick, lazy and generally useless people, wouldn’t you say? If there are around 10 million undocumented people in our country that means each of those shiftless folks is sending $3000 to $6000 back home to help relatives. That helps the relatives stay in their own country. That should be a good thing, right?
I live in Tucson, AZ. And yes I am retired. I left my job teaching and doing research in the medical school here, part of the University of Arizona, in 2012. I had a home in Chiapas from 1990 to 1993 when the local chief of the federales decided he liked my house. And why should some Yanqui have it? He and his buddies had automatic weapons. Best I had were some rocks. Some years passed and he was arrested and now spends his days these days in prison. The building is now a clothing store. I don’t mind because it means a small business is prospering there today.
I agree about rural France!!!. Been to that lovely country many times. I am partial to Normandy. The small costal town of Granville. Visited it twice so far. Great choice! I did get to the old Yugoslavia in 1970. The memory is pretty hazy of that area.
We visited Costa Rica in 2006 and liked it a lot. So far the tally of countries I have visited stands at 47.
Unfortunate. I see why you are leery of the police. When the police are simply better armed terrorists (as they were in this country until modern policing standard arose), situations like yours can arise.
I too am in the med school in SD doing research. As we are smaller, that is almost identifying in and of itself.
Getting back to the poo-slinging, I do not find the current situation acceptable. I have been to Tucson several times (Saguaro NM E and W, second cousin in the D Astronomy, 2 sisters in Phoenix), and know that it is quite hispanic. I’m cool with that - love the ambiance. What is not right or good is the illegality. That is unsustainable.
As I noted in an earlier rant, the population of St Louis, MO is 309000 and we expect 310000 this year. I think that is a huge underestimate. I bet we top 500,000. Where are those to go? And with the continual overpopulation of Central America, we can expect the flow to continue and increase. It’s not just unsustainable. It’s intolerable, and it will re-elect Trump. Especially since Dems are banging the “abolish ICE/open the border/amnesty for all” drum (read the platform and program of Julian Castro - I’m not making this up).
Estimates vary. Recent estimates have suggested that it is more 22,000,000 illegals. That counts 4,000,000-7,000,000 visa overstays (which I also am very concerned about), as well as other categories. When you add in the millions of jobs taken by H-1B, L-1, OPT, J-1, B-1, B-2, O-1, TN-1, E-2 and half a dozen other visas, millions of Americans are out of work.
Yeah we do need to control our end of things. Back in the 1980’s there were something like 100,000 a month coming across. And law enforcement and BP were finding hundreds of corpses in our unforgiving desert every month. Very sad indeed. At that time most were seasonal worker folks. From 2000 thru the Obama years the numbers fell steadily. Now it has spiked again.
Dems think that this plays to their base. But it does not. Because the numbers are overwhelming.
As to the desert, this is another serious issue. In 1981, we visited all the desert parks except Joshua Tree. Organ Pipe was my favorite. Recent pictures are infuriating. Trash, crap, abandoned stuff. And this is due to the continued toleration of them in the USA. I DO AGREE THAT THIS IS PARTIALLY DUE TO EMPLOYERS. I do agree. That is certainly true. But it is also true that DEMOCRATIC ATTITUDES are part of the process. I used to be a Dem. I ran for State Senate as a Dem. I got a campaign contribution from George McGovern ($25, the piker). But the immigration thing is a continued problem for Dems. AND IT IS NOT TRADITIONAL PARTY POSITION. In 2006, Obama called for deporting illegals. In 1996, Clinton did the same. The Jordan Commission on Immigration in 1995 called for enforcement. The Dems have TRADITIONALLY HELD FOR ENFORCEMENT.
What happened? The Dems have decided that the Latino lobby is going to have control of this issue. It’s Stockholm Syndrome.
This is why Trump won in 2016. The single issue that put him over was immigration and work visas. If dems want to beat him (and I want him to lose), they need to rethink the immigration issue. We cannot have open-borders.
The population of Guatemala(16.9 million), Honduras (9.2million) and El Salvador (6.3million) together is 32.4(roughly). At 500,000/yr pretty soon those countries are gonna notice people are leaving. And not long before that their economies would suffer for sure.
If a half million people a year are leaving a total population of 32.4 million… not counting normal mortality rates… seems to me there won’t be serious overpopulation there.
I want trump to lose as well. For all sorts of reasons, not only immigration.
