Discussion: A Running List Of The Probes That Pose The Greatest Threat To Trumpworld

I agree. Dolt45 has been untouchable forever, Mueller report like water off a duck, Congress appears to be powerless, and on it goes. And I don’t believe he will ever leave willingly. The presidency is his first big financial success!

Voting Trump out of office won’t accomplish a great deal unless the Senate is also retaken. Mitch McConnell came out and publicly stated if Trump loses in 2020 absolutely no Dem inspired or sponsored legislation will get through the Senate. I will also say that probably goes for SCOTUS nominees, and not just in the last year of a Dem’s term, but for the entire 4 years.

Hater! (I.e. I like how you think.)

But that presumes that Trump runs and loses but Repubs keep the senate, which I think unlikely. If the election were held today it might well happen, but the next 1.5 years will change the political climate sufficiently to make it very hard for Repubs to keep either. In any case, we can keep frightening ourselves into hypercaution.

Plus I bet if there’s a good chance of the GOP losing the senate McConnell will choose not to run. Losing would be too humiliating for him

Mitch has basically zero desire to be minority leader. If Repubs lose the senate in 2020, they likely won’t regain it for years. Demographic trends make that very likely, e.g. TX, FL, VA, NC trending blue. The deep south, midwest and mountain west can’t save the GOP by themselves. Lose the coasts, lose the country.

Interesting connection - one of the lawyers who “won” that case (to let it go to trial), George Conway. Yes, Kellyanne’s Trump Trash Tweeting hubby.

Hillary Clinton on the impeachment process. Pelosi may need to hire her as a spokesperson for this. She has articulated the steps a bit more clearly than has Pelosi imho. While I don’t disagree with what HRC is saying here, I don’t think the Dems will get the witness cooperation and document production they need without initiating a formal impeachment inquiry.

One of the near term objectives of the Dems is to get that list of on-going cases unredacted and then demand that Barr take his hands off of it or it will constitute obstruction. I would call in the USAOs from the offices and tell them that any interference by Barr will be considered obstruction of justice and they should not agree to his demands. Turn them all into Don McGahn, fearful of the law and reputational damage. The way for Congress to preserve those other probes and cases is to use the dishonesty of Barr to assert that he is in fact obstructing the probe and Congress’ constitutional function.

I agree with your posts, but what are your thoughts on the trump PR machine baiting for impeachment so they can weaponize it to rally the base (and they hope others) then turning the “Lock Her Up” chant onto Pelosi as a campaign strategy for 2020?

I’ve never experienced an election where the GOP base didn’t turn out. I think that argument simply doesn’t hold water. This is about us, about our coalition, about our country. It’s not about him or them. The politics of this work for Dems if we impeach, and they don’t (imho) if we don’t. If we don’t impeach, he will claim he did nothing wrong because Mueller didn’t indict and the Dems didn’t impeach. We will have no rebuttal. He will then campaign as the would be autocrat who fought the law and won. He will run a revanchist campaign against the ‘corrupt Dems and FBI’ who tried to get him and a racist campaign. Backed by a reasonably good economy, he will win. Fight him now, declare him a crook and the GOP owns the Trump problem. He will be on the defensive. His claims of innocence will have less to zero merit following public hearings and impeachment and he will lose badly.

Americans do not understand the lure of strong men. But a guy who fights the law and wins and cowers his opposition into submission will be viewed as a tough, strong leader and he’ll get the benefit of the doubt with Indies. Prove he’s a crook and do what you can to hold him accountable and things swing our way.

Oddly, they’ve never fooled even a majority. But they’ve managed to work around this glitch pretty well so far.

Mitch won’t be able, nor will anyone else, to accurately predict GOP prospects going into the 2020 election with a great deal of surety. Too much fluidity in the electorate. Mitch is running. The national and state party apparatus are all set up to support him. Any primary challengers will be cast aside in short order. There’s no way McConnell in the summer of 2020 looks around, senses a poor GOP climate and foresees a possible loss, and tells the party “Not looking good, I’m bailing! Good luck finding a replacement candidate to run in my place!!”

If the POTUS is under investigation by this nation’s counterintelligence agencies for being under the influence of an enemy state before he even takes the oath of office, shouldn’t that disqualify everything he does as President?

I ponder the other outcome of impeachment though. Dems impeach, the Senate holds an actual trial with witnesses and testimony and documents. It’s all very public. A vote is held and Trump remains in office. Now he goes on a national tour, touting the fact that in a very real sense a trial was conducted and the evidence and testimony was found lacking as to convicting him. He declares his innocence, he’s vindicated. The witch hunt is now officially dead and over, and his detractors failed spectacularly (in his telling). Has he been given a gift, a boost going into the election? Or is it a wash? I fail to see the third alternative, that it helps the Dems, unless what is revealed during the Senate trial is so appalling and depraved it leaves voters turned off to Trump. But has anything appalling and depraved heretofore accomplished that?

Unfortunately, for him and an awfully large portion of his base, that’s a feature. They’ve all tried the rules of America’s democracy, and they don’t feel that they’ve worked out all that well for them. They’ve given up on America, and have decided to try the autocrat route. Breaking the law to achieve their small-minded aims is what’s expected.

The 2018 election results showed that the share of white voters dipped from 2016. We brought out a lot of POC while improving among whites. That’s our growth area. Those folks want impeachment and accountability. They’re sick of the rich, white and powerful getting away with shit. No one personifies that more than the Trump family. Boldly go for impeachment, invest in minority and millennial turnout, rely on your backbone of female voters and beat their asses. That’s how you win.
