Here’s a pro tip: It’s not a “baby” until it’s born. Up to that point it may variously be a zygote, a fetus or some other transitional form. It is NOT a “child” and “unborn child” is an oxymoron. While this was an absolutely horrifying crime, it is in no wise equivalent to an abortion, which is normally a medical procedure performed by a physician or other health professional. Can we stop lying now?? Please. Professional fascists should not be in charge of writing our laws.
All of the above
Dude, after citizens united, any preposterous argument can and will be made and enshrined into law. Just because it sounds dumb and is, doesn’t mean that the wack jobs don’t have representation and legal clout.
This is just another desperate attempt to complete the mission of the anti-abortionists. This incident at best has a slight relation to their cause but because it is so gruesome, they are trying to conflate it with legal abortion.
It is an insult to the collective intelligence of my state.
This has Cory Gardener written all over it and is exactly why we shouldn’t have ever allowed him another shot at misrepresenting us. Colorado needs the same law that Oregon is instituting, EVERYONE should be automatically enrolled to vote because the lack of turnout is killing democracy.
“She’s just an abortionist practicing an unconventional technique,” wrote Colorado-based Personhood USA on their blog. “How horrible.”
You know who’s horrible? Anyone who would say something like that in response to a crime like this.
“Ma’am, we’re here to fingerprint your vagina. Has anyone else been in there recently? Family, friends? Just the facts, ma’am.”
As always, for conservatives the end justifies the means. Oh, and they never, ever, ever stop.
This is just SOP for them. They have no shame.
Abortion opponents aren’t waiting for that to happen. Instead, they have latched on to this newest tragedy, and have used it as an opening to remind people that if the “Brady Amendment” had passed, Lane would be facing a murder charge.
And I, in turn, will point out that this is an admission that the Brady Amendment would not have saved the baby.
A prosecutor should be able to find enough violations to punish the sicko - how about fraud, kidnapping, unlawful practice of medicine, etc., in addition to assault and attempted homicide? If the law allows the sentences for any convictions to be served serially, you could have someone jailed a long, long time.
Dood, I never suggested that the wack jobs didn’t have representation or clout; I simply suggested that the wack jobs rarely give their dumb ideas sufficient thought.
This is the question that quickly reveals that proponents of personhood laws are just out to ban abortion.
Personhood laws pit incredible ignorance of biology, the limitations of our medical knowledge and forensics, and the limitations of law enforcement and the justice system against the complexity and vagaries of real-world biology.
What works for personhood-at-live-birth would be a disaster for personhood-at-conception, starting with the intrusiveness required to determine that a person has come into existence. Add the vast numbers of early miscarriages and the difficulty in determining the cause of such miscarriages, and law enforcement is left searching for a needle in a needlestack. Throw in the wide variety of outcomes possible once an egg has been fertilized (molar pregnancy, parasitic twin, fetus in fetu, etc.), and the term “person” itself is shown to be unreliable when applied from the moment of conception. And, the elephant in the room, a pre-live-birth “person” is contained within the body of another person, is dependent on that person’s body, places great demands upon that body, and can sometimes threaten the health of or even the life of that body.
The result would be a society where no fertile woman could ever feel safe from a charge of homicide and where no pregnant woman could feel safe from court-ordered limitations on her actions even when those actions are taken in the interests of her own health or well-being. I also expect that personhood-at-conception would lead to some employers discriminating against fertile women in the hiring process.
Sorry, lets back up a bit. I totally agree with you and the idea that the Repubs just toss things out like no one is paying attention. It is also very easy to shoot down any, if any, logic that is behind their actions.
The motivation is obvious and is consistent only with the fact that they are obsessed with lady parts, sexual activity and the unborn.
It always comes back to that ultimately, everything else is the smoke screen.
I was just expanding on your idea I guess, not saying that you claimed anything.
Fair enough. Suffice it to say that should a law like that ever get passed, some really odd lawsuits will likely result.
That’s unintended, due to lack of forethought. What is intended, is, as you mentioned, controlling the lives of women.
