Discussion for article #233175

Bob Simon was an actual reporter, not a pretty face reading press releases. He will be missed.

On top of all his career work in the field, he made a nice appearance in Bill Moyers “Buying the War” on PBS (free viewing on line). One of your top mainstream reporters and a fine journalist. That part of the West Side Highway can be dangerous, people always rushing to catch the next light since they are not sequenced, cab driver likely screwed up here. Shame.

That’s terrible news. Mr. Simon always seemed like a truth-teller and a decent person. Condolences to his family and friends.

Wow! Four more Peabody’s than O’Reilly! Quite the body of work.

Rest in peace, Mr. Simon. Unlike so many of today’s journalists who think it isn’t their job to correct lies, you were a credit to your profession.

The old guard is steadily disappearing…the WWII generation of Cronkite, Sevareid, Murrow, Trout…now Bradley, Simon, Wallace. From a generation when networks treated their news divisions as something special. Today, not so much.

Coming up…four days of SNL promotion on the Today show.

Strange how so many people who do dangerous things for a living, soldiers and Mr. Simon spring readily to mind, are killed in car accidents and street violence when they return home…

RIP Bob
Condolences to the family and CBS.

“… treated their news divisions as something special. Today, not so much.”

Today it’s just another commodity they’re forced to provide because the other networks do.
They would do away with it if they could.

And Fox, The Ministry of Truth, the propaganda arm of those who would turn us into a military dictatorship if they get the opportunity. I thought Cheney & Co would do just that after 9 11.

What a pity. One of the last of the old school of journalists who believed more in the truth than “balance”. It calls to mind the similar tragic fate of David Halberstam, who died in an automobile accident in 2007. Halberstam’s book The Best and the Brightest was one of the best explanations of how the US got mired in the war in Vietnam.

In both cases, good men taken before their time.

A true journalist, Bob Simon epidomized the highest practice of the 1st Amendment. I trusted him in life and I honor his passing.

Sad news. We can all take a lesson though. So many in NYC do not wear seatbelts in the back seat of cabs and livery cabs. I have no idea if he was or not in this case, or if it would have made a difference in the accident. Everyone should wear them, it takes only a few seconds, and may just save your life.

A real reporter who didn’t have make up stories about where and what he’d done. Imagine that. Take that Brian…

How sad. Bob Simon was one of those reporters that, no matter the topic, I would always stop what I was doing to listen or watch, because you knew the information being relayed was true, relevant and something that actually had integrity. One of the few left in American media worthy of being called a journalist. RIP Mr. Simon, and thank you to your family for the no doubt continual sacrifices they made supporting you in your pursuit of the truth and informing the American public. They deserve as much credit for your reporting as you did - and I’m sure you would agree if you were still with us. You will be sorely missed.
