How much revenue does women soccer generate? The money has to come from somewhere.
“We are the best in the world, have three World Cup Championships, four Olympic Championships, and the USMNT get paid more just to show up than we get paid to win major championships.”
That’s it in a nutshell.
@wbmanx: I don’t think US Soccer gets much revenue from their professional play. If they were, all the players would be in three-digit income brackets. They probably have sponsorships and get cuts of the athletes’ commercial contracts, along with sales of team merchandise. If you were to look at those revenue streams, I promise the championship women’s team would be rolling in the dough. Title IX in reverse.
I’d be interested to know this as well. This is sort of an interesting case since they are playing for national teams, not private professional teams that can pay their players based on how much revenue they bring in/expect to bring in.
For example, the Minnesota Lynx are a much better team compared to their respective league than the Minnesota Timberwolves. But if you think that the Lynx players should be paid as much as the Timberwolves’ you are out of your mind.
Just saw this on ESPN’s page:
Today, #USWNT filed a wage-discrimination action against the U.S. Soccer Federation claiming that despite generating nearly $20 million more in revenue than the U.S. men’s team, the women are paid almost four times less. @alexmorgan13 took to Instagram to elaborate: “… This is not only about equal pay – we get paid less than half of our male counterparts – but also equal treatment. We deserve to play in top-notch, grass-only facilities like the U.S. Men’s National Team, not dangerous turf fields. We want to have decent travel accommodations. We have dedicated our lives to this sport and our country and we love soccer and our fans. We think it’s time for employers to truly address the inequality and do not only what is fair, but what is right …"
