Discussion: 5 Points On Why A DHS Shutdown Is Growing More Likely

Discussion for article #233207

GOP setting up a crisis without a fallback plan? I’m shocked. Shocked.

“I can’t really predict” what will happen, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), a
top target of Democrats in 2016, told TPM on Wednesday. “I do know the
department won’t shut down. No matter what happens, the department won’t
shut down.”

Absolutely true. The dept. won’t shut down but many will be laid off and no one reamining will get paid until it’s funded. For Johnson, people working for free is not a problem.

“The answer, I believe, is not to change the Senate rules. The answer is for Senate Democrats not to be obstructionists.”

Obstruction by one party in the Senate! Quelle horreur! Have they no shame?

I used to think that Republicans believed history began in January, 2009. It’s pretty apparent now that they can’t remember anything before January, 2015.

Republicans are voting to cut border guards, and doing nothing to deport illegals. Republicans are endangering US citizens!

Why do security personell have to show up for work if they are not getting paid?

Any Republican calling Democrats obstructionist must think we all have a really really short memory…I dont think many people are gonna buy that one.
As for the DHS…if they are not completely funded then they will have to cut back on all that work they do for the MPAA and RIAA…threatening people for making illegal underwear and other similar things that do us so much harm…I think its a useless agency and a money pit…but thats my opinion

I thought DHS is the only thing keeping us safe from instant Sharia Law forced upon the nation by ISIS. If they’re not so important, can we please stop paying for all that?

No, they have no shame. Give up on that one.

Personally, I don’t get it, I really don’t. Yes, I do understand that the GOP will lay this at the feet of “Democratic intransigence” and no one in the media will push back on it. BUT, that doesn’t stop the fact that this department was created under a Republican president (remember, the war preznit?). How does the GOP square that?

When in fact what they really are doing is sniffing out fake Gucci bags online so they can seize their domain without a court order…and we pay for that

It may be in their federal contract regarding furloughs. Just a guess, but it seems reasonable. What doesn’t seem reasonable is making these same folks, non-essential personnel, be furloughed twice in less than a couple of years, forced to make mortgage payments and other bills to be paid on time, while these Pukes play folly with political games, and their own personal financial security in the balance. That’s not only cruel to working people, but a lot of those non-essential personnel don’t make much to begin with as public sector workers.
