What’s truly needed is a standardized, uniform system of voting in every state, every district, every precinct. Pronto.
ETA: Basically, so long as the systems have set ground rules, provide a paper trail for possible recounts and offer each voter a paper receipt detailing their choice(s) – just like a grocery receipt or ATM receipt.
The decentralized nature of our voting system makes it less subject to hacking on a national level. What is more dangerous are the rampant attempts to disenfranchise voters.
This Slate podcast does a good job at explaining both issues: http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/amicus/2016/10/will_trump_supporters_try_to_intimidate_minority_voters_on_election_day.html
never gonna happen.
I think that Hasen mentioned something akin to your proposal in his Fresh Air interview.
However never gonna happen…
I agree with regards to the voter suppression. I’ve never been a big fan of these computerized systems of voting that don’t offer the voter a receipt – like we get at the ATM. I don’t really mind having various methods so long as their are set ground rules, like paper trails and receipts.
Even with a receipt, how would you know that your vote wasn’t altered after it was printed? As you may guess, I hate electronic voting machines.
I guess nearly any system can be tampered with. However, if the system provided each voter with a printed receipt detailing their choice(s) in that election as well as provided the site with a paper trail (that stays locked behind the machinery) for spot checks and possible recounts, I think the chances of tampering is lowered a lot.
ETA: My personal preference is paper ballots. Permanent ink. Copies.
Ideally, at least in my mind, an electronic machine would print a paper receipt that is checked by the voter then fed into a separate tabulating machine. Automatic random audits as well as a paper trail in case of any contested results.
Registration suppression/ voter suppression is the bigger issue by far though, right now.
Has anyone else had bouts of nausea and massively increased anxiety over the last few weeks?
Actually, I’ve been pretty calm. The hard part is going to be after the election.
Would be good to know which states have not requested Federal help…
I had been up until the poll noise showed the race tightening. If it close, I have zero confidence that the American people won’t elect Trump.
I REALLY want to know which 4 states are so ‘convinced’ they are unhackable!!!
Does anyone know if the story about Anonymous intervening to keep the GOP from stealing Ohio last election were ever discredited or otherwise confirmed? I believe the background was that they believed GWB had hacked Ohio’s voting machines in his successful re-election. The story kind of disappeared after a lot of folks gave it credence because of the whole Karl Rove-Megyn Kelly on air exchange concerning Ohio and a coming GOP wave for Romney.
