Discussion: 2nd Yale Alum: Yeah, Carson Got Pranked By Magazine's Fake Psychology Exam

Carson isn’t exactly humble and being humble yet being on a quest for riches and fame just don’t seem to go together. Like oil and water or religion and politics.

Clearly, even Carson hasn’t looked up the meaning of “Humility” yet.

Tell him it is just for Louisiana, but put “Louisiana Purchase” in the contract. It’s just a detail. Blame the writer.

Too much humility messes up his hairdo. He prefers dry climates.

That’s just great. All these years, he thought this was real and that he was recognized by a faculty member for his honesty instead of his gullibility.

This just confirms that the man cannot distinguish reality from fiction.

Just maybe he shouldn’t be President of the United States. You know what I mean? Maybe that wouldn’t be such a great idea.

I mean, this is fantastic, right? Carson told a story about being the “honest” one involved in what sounded like a psych prof’s meta-test, and when the story is questioned, his people produce an article showing that it was a hoax on the students and Carson fell for it. That’s his defense? To make himself look like the one guy who didn’t get the joke? Wow…

Holy shit. It’s like the basement lair of a stalker…but he’s stalking himself!

I worked for a while with a guy like Carson. Very soft-spoken, in this affected pseudo-wise manner like Master Po, very holier than thou, strict vegetarian, all that. He was big into the gentle-correction style of criticism. A friend of mine who dated him for a while filled out the picture—heavy into beer and porn too, and would bust on people behind their backs, but that wasn’t prominently featured in the public persona. Solid at his job—oh, who cares whether he reads TPM, he’s a photographer, and quite good—but as a person not what he pretended to be.

The thing that gets me is the portrait with Jesus. Yeah, I mean, that’s cool if you’re, you know, Luke or John or Peter, one of those. Even Judas could have had one in happier days, right? But if you were born in the twentieth century, there’s really no reason for a picture like that to exist.

My parents have a lot of walls like these in their house.

Unsurprisingly, I know few people who enjoy their company.

No joke, they actually do. And all the nonsense just makes them like him more. That’s what makes them so frightening to progressives; him, not so much.

I can’t help but wonder if he still genuinely didn’t realize it until now. Yeah, it absolutely wouldn’t surprise me if he’s just bullshitting to make himself look better, but given everything else, it also wouldn’t surprise me if the fake exam-giver had told the one or few people left at the end “Congratulations, here’s $10 because you’re the most honest person” as sort of a pity prize for having wasted their time on a prank. And that Carson still didn’t get it, took it to be real, and related it straight for the book.

If that’s the case, I also can’t help but wonder if this will make him come out looking worse than if he had just made up the incident out of whole cloth

It was probably ultimately revealed to him in a manner any normal person would have grasped, but he’s so oblivious.

Picture a hidden camera/practical joke show but when they finally reveal the gag to the targeted person, he still doesn’t get it, needs it further explained, etc. :man:

I doubt it; people in these kind of positions get all kind of awards and certificates. Often they get something every time they speak, like at Mannatech, so 90% of them are meaningless. That’s why most people with distinguished records and lots of awards, even those who put them on display on a wall, don’t put up every single one like Carson apparently has. I mean, generally you don’t frame your magazine clippings when you’ve have several best-selling books and a lot of media coverage in general. That’s something a Navin R. Johnson does when he has one interview ever.

Especially, a very fine likeness of yourself with Klingon Jesus.

I’m honestly becoming more and more convinced that was the case. Carson has spent the better part of his life believing he really did win the Most Honest Kid in School prize. That’s why he was so upset at that press conference and why he seems genuinely shocked that he isn’t being believed. Him hurt.

The highest reward of a “con” is that the mark never realizes he’s been had.

En masse, let’s “admit” that we were the people whom he stabbed in the belt buckle. We can maybe pile it on and claim to have been present when he was saved, or whatever he wants to call it. :smirk:

Sadly “nouveau riche” decor. I feel kind of sad for Dr. Carson. If he had just stuck to writing books and not snatched at the golden ring of high office he might have been able to enjoy his retirement with some dignity. He could have continued to nourish his swollen ego without criticism and basked in the adoration of the religious wing nuts. Now he has shown the world that Jesus hasn’t cured his temper tantrums and that he has terrible taste in home decor. What new revelations await us?

More likely they tried to explain it to the Einstein but ended up giving up on the effort.

It’s bittersweet for me. I’m not a fan of the “respectability politics” crowd, but I can’t help but feel I’m wounding myself slightly every time I rip into such a high visibility African-American success story.
