OK that might make me nervous. Is there a cruise for scaredy-cats?
In '94 I think my then wife and I took a helicopter tour of what I guess is the currently erupting volcano (CRS syndrome ).
It was not erupting, just lava flowing through tubes into the ocean.
It was cool.

It was one of the most amazing things to witness up close. And the sunrise excursion we took was one of the best things I have ever done nature/sightseeing wise. It was a super clear relatively cloudless night, could faintly see the Milky Way on the way out… and arrived there still int he dark at what seemed like looking into a spot described by Dante.
Then having the sun rise while we were the (for over an hour) was simply breathtaking.
That two week period when the Kamokuna lave tube was as active as it was (even the lava boat tour guide was saying he never saw it so big and heavy) was like seeing a fire hydrant with the cap knocked off.
To give a sense of scale, those cliffs are a good 90 to 100 feet tall.
That hose of lava shooting out was a good 10-15 feet in diameter.
Here are some still images I took:
Here’s an image someone else took and published of the lava boat we were on, the next day from our excursion.
It really gives a sense of scale.
Look closely at the people on the boat to get a sense of proportion:
Yikes, I think I’d want a little more space between me and that cloud, not to mention the lava. But wow. I am so glad you had that experience.
