I’m not going to hold my breath for any action on this. Congress is already occupied with doing nothing about climate change and doesn’t have the time to do nothing to prepare for solar flares.
the thing is, since these solar storms sound like they occur pretty regularly, it is interesting that not one has affected us significantly other than Carrington. That is why I am a little skeptical of these %. Predictions are just that. I mean there was supposed to be a 90% chance of a 7.0 or greater quake in the Bay Area in the 25 years after the 1989 quake and so far (Oh MY God,Oh no…rumble rum-
“According to a NASA study, the Earth just missed what would have been not a civilization ending but …”
It depends on the definition of “civilisation.” It’s water, refrigeration, AC & ventilation that allow modern buildings without windows that open,… Our just-in-time logistic system will leave most grocery shelves bare within a few days. You’d need to walk or ride a bike to get there anyway.
Personally, I think morbidity would exceed The Black Death in the most advanced countries. There is every reason to be sceptical of %, but like earthquakes, it is not a question of if, but when.
How sure is it that it would not be a civilization ending event? At Fukushima, the reactors started melting down and releasing radioactive material after a day without power. It sounds pretty sure the power grid would be down. How sure is it that the back up generators would work?
I expect some back-up generators would work. Whether the lines, transformers, switches, would allow the current to flow where it’s needed is unlikely.
