Did he go on to say, “Mr. President, I would have stayed at your hotel, but I was told Saudi Arabia had booked all the rooms, and the Russians were holding fort at the bar”?

The Finnish President is paraphrasing Benjamin Franklin here, and undoubtedly, it went over the head of the American President.
ETA: Finland also shares a land border with Russia. As such, it’s important to them that the US and NATO are united and present a strong counterbalance to Russian aggression. They don’t want to be “Ukrained”.

“Keep it going on.” is exactly the opposite of “Make it great again.” They found themselves a real stable genius of a President with an incisive wit , those Finns did.

It cost Finland 11% of their territory to end the Talvisodassa (“Winter War”, a great Finnish language movie, btw,) in 1940. So, yeah the Finnish might have some issues with Trump’s bestie.
