Dems Block Data Center Bill Designed to Boost Husted’s Campaign: 'A Proxy for Corruption'

‘They Are the Party of Data Centers’ Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) has some major data center skeletons in his closet from his time as lieutenant governor of Ohio. He knows it, his Democratic challenger — the longtime Ohio elected official Sherrod Brown — knows it, his colleagues in the Senate know it, voters back home…

I found it interesting that you described Zuckerberg as the Facebook founder, but didn’t mention him as the Meta CEO. That mention would have more clearly connected him to another TPM story about Meta using tax loopholes to avoid $4B in taxes. I know TPM readers make this connection, but as these stories go wider, a clear connection helps those less-political junkies get it and spread it more easily. And Thanks! for what you guys do.

At this point, anyone buying the lies and corruption of the MAGA party is a lost cause forever.

I agree with you. At this point, some people just want to be lied to. And they can’t give up on their dream of DJT being Jesus.

I dislike AI. My dislike of huge data centers is intense.

I actually still refer to him (and Meta) as Facebook. All Meta is is a rebranding when Facebook became too toxic. Sort of like Comcast/Xfinity. Facebook was expressly founded for the creepy purpose of rating college women’s appearance.

Do I now have to call artificial ingredients super ingredients?

Yes, I’m afraid so. And artificial limbs are super limbs.

The Minecraft thing was an Easter egg, but the point stands: we shouldn’t have Easter eggs in any official software because, by definition, it is not maintained and unknown code.

Microsoft eventually stopped putting Easter eggs and things for exactly this reason, although many tiny Easter eggs can be found in their older operating systems.

I give no point to Big Balls for his poem.

I used to think data centers were a good idea, simply because it reduced networking costs and allowed several businesses to pool their resources, reducing overall cost. From my perspective before I retired, 15 years ago, they were going to take my job as a network consultant for small businesses. I thought that was a good thing, because I was beginning to suspect that I was not the right answer to my customer’s problems.

Fast forward to now, and I realize I could not have been more wrong.

I remember visiting data centers way back in the day (due diligence). They were basically gobs of hard drives, on which businesses could off-load critical data from their networks for disaster recovery.

Now, we’ve got super-sized warehouses popping up all over the place, with no discussion of use, huge expense, requiring critical societal needs to be ignored with no discussion of plans and priorities.

The public is being ripped off and AI hasn’t really started yet.

I live in Tucson. We are a desert city. Water is precious here. Some time back an outfit proposed to build a large data center here. Turned out that to cool their gear in our intense summer heat they required more water than Tucson uses annually. We get water from the Central Arizona Project canal and underground sources. We need this water to survive. Folk from across the political spectrum got pissed off. The city councit listened and gave the company the boot. But they tried to build their data center in the sly. The city stepped in and cut off their water. So…the company is looking elsewhere. Now it’s Mesa, AZ’ turn.

One hopeful thing which has happened is the way Trump has piled on to the whole AI business and claimed for himself the right to rename and rebrand it. It is more of his territorial dog behavior, lifting his leg on everything in sight to mark it for himself. Unlike with the Kennedy Center, the greedy motive is obvious here. He will also be claiming that by renaming AI that he is one of the pioneers of the new thing, and he will seek to monetize this into the billions. Still, the techno billionaires can’t be loving this, as he coopts them and their industry. Everything he touches dies and turns to shit. He is an unlikely ally in the battle to control AI, but he will prove to be one as he cuckolds the whole thing.

AI was already going Code Blue before he touched it…

His greasy fingerprints will be indelibly smeared on it just in time for the AI financial collapse.

“The whole thing was a disturbing mix of AI slop, philosophy, and spirituality expressed in the voice of “the Republic.” Aficionados soon noticed the wild screed also appeared to be a remix of the “end poem” from the Minecraft game blended with government overtones and odd AI inputs.”

That is absolutely 100% dead-center bullseye on-brand for Trump. A hastily thrown together pile of mostly stolen garbage. Trump’s brand, you might say, is and always has been Slop.
