Democrats Pulled Off A Quiet Revolution In The COVID Relief Package. Can They Make It Stick?

But it sure does work out for the people toward the top of the capitalism pyramid.

Kind of like modern day sharecropping, but other people (ie. government) pay to help keep those wages low!

It’s amazing they still call themselves ‘Club for Growth’ when they are clearly trying to shrink their party to true believers.

One of the things that I think gets lost in these conversations is that these jobs-waitress, nursing-home aide, hotel housekeeper, etc. is that it’s a position created for labor that needs to be performed so that an owner, or corporation can make money.
Opponents of raising the minimum wage say that these are entry level jobs, they falsely claim that minimum wage is not meant to be a living wage, and that these jobs are for teenagers, which is all BS. A high school student can’t do most of these jobs and still continue to attend high school. And with little control over one’s work schedule it’s hard to plan one’s life. In some cases during the Obama years retail workers weren’t getting their schedules two weeks in advance, or one week, and then it went to call in for your schedule, and the dreaded on call which meant you needed to be sit around and be available to come in if they needed you. If you didn’t play be these rules they’d cut your hours.

an important lesson for all
to quote Bill Maher “progressives need more work horses and less show horses”

Excellent analogy. To this day, the GOP would do away with SS, passed in the 30s and Medicare, passed in the 60s if they could. I don’t want to think about what would have happened to my older relatives without those programs. And those were all people who went to work at age 14 and worked until they were ready to drop.

But “tithe” is apparently still OK to use so long as you don’t, you know, wonder what Jesus would do with the money…

…and this mega church’s second plane isn’t about to buy itself.

I would frame this more as “coalition building” and buying broader support for this effort because almost everyone benefits from it. The bill leaves very little room for republicans to claim that its leaving the middle class behind. They’ll still say that, but I can’t fathom the talking points that justify their own bad faith position.

That the benefit stays whole until the top 1-2% of wage earners is fine because unlike social security and unemployment IT DOES NOT SCALE upwards with more benefits as individual incomes increase.

I don’t think the current benefit would do much for a middle class suburbian family living close to the edge as the whole annual benefit might be consumed in a single month of mortgage, insurance, and car payments, etc however the same benefit would go much further to a struggling family with more modest spending.

Wordy word word. Lately every thing he says on Friday night ends up on Fox with approval on the weekend.

They would strip entire classes of people of protections of the law.

They support the “conscience clause” which allows them to deny health care services and contraceptives to Others.

They demonize BLM protesters, defend violent cops against charges of police brutality, and slander police reform as “defunding.”

They want to decriminalize running down protesters in the street and criminalize giving food or water to someone waiting in line to vote.

They weaponized the border, oppose granting citizenship to migrant farm workers and the undocumented, and created a humanitarian crisis with children in detention centers.

They attack trans people, oppose marriage equality, and would claw back adoption rights from gays.

It seems that they’ve already come up with their Final Solution.

Is that all? Yep, they’re evil bastards. Gotta wonder how any ordinary person could vote for one of them, but they do.

The secret to establishing popular programs that legislators don’t dare touch is universality, as was done for Social Security and Medicare. Does it bother me that Bill Gates can get a check or see a doctor? Nope. Can his kids pay in-state tuition at U Washington? Sure. Can he get on a bus and pay the same for a ticket as you and I, even though they are subsidized? Yep.

The answer is to raise his tax rates, especially on capital gains and above all to make sure all income is taxed, but let him and other keep whatever benefits are out there.

The template is to find (preferably) or fabricate some truly despicable human (who happens to be a nonwhite immigrant), amplify outrage that the person benefits from the legislation, and propose a solution that eliminates benefits for tens of millions of people who are not that person. Follow up with a proposed corporate tax cut to magically provide the same benefits at no net cost to taxpayers.

Amen! “Welfare” is for those people but tax credits are for all of us.

Also - I had my kids overseas. We weren’t poor, but kids really stretched our budget. Government subsidies- national healthcare, paid maternity leave, child payments, and subsidized childcare - made it possible for both of us to be part-time when the kids were very little, then ramp our careers back up as they grew.

It was awesome. All y’all should have those benefits too. It’s good for the kids, it’s good for the parents, it’s good for the economy, and it’s good for society

Except for the 50% of households with no children, either because they’re childless or the kids are grown up.

Someone making multiple times my salary does not need my dollars to pay for their failure to use both control.

Love it! And the kicker: corporate tax cut will pay for itself over ten years at a 4% GDP (borrowing from Trumps corporate bail out).

Totally agree. Also eliminate public education, laws against child abuse, child pornography, child labor, and requirements that health insurance covers childhood vaccinations.

Time to cancel this burdensome special interest.
