Yes, but what do I or you do about that? Can’t afford even the cheapest tv station, don’t have billions (plus the backing of the Saudis) to buy Twitter.
It’s also a lot easier to persuade voters (especially of the low information variety) when you’re not in any way attached to reality, the truth, or even telling a consistent story. One of the persistent issues in this area is that if Dems play the GOP game then everybody who normally supports Dems will be put off by the lies and distortions. Dems worry about the truth, and they worry about hypocrisy; Republicans don’t give a fuck about either–unless it comes from a Dem, of course.
There (hopefully) will never be a Dem version of either Trump or Musk; the unfortunate reality is you have to beat them without being able to play their game. I’m not saying Dems can’t improve campaigning and messaging, but nobody on this side wants to support a fascist or a fascistic campaign. If we wanted that, we’d have voted for Trump.

Maybe we should hire some Evangelical preachers to give great sermons and work in plugs for Democrats? Maybe we need to figure out what rural Americans like to watch and sponsor that. Some Nascar, pro wrestling, reality television that plugs Democrats once in a while.

Someone remind me how many “Tweets” or “Threads”or ?? did Obama and Biden do in 12 years of being President? As many as Trump did in one week or two? Democrats think politics is done the day they get elected. Not taking advantage of what is staring them in the face is hardly the fault of media. When Trump got kicked off Twitter he started his own social media site to keep in public’s face.

The difference is that the dems don’t like to be lied to (or to tell lies) just to make themselves feel good. Republicans whole heartedly embrace the friendly lie. And by friendly, I mean that “immigrants are taking your jobs and illegally voting” and “the economy is in the shitter and it’s not your fault”. You know, friendly, evil lies.

We can do this for the future, but it won’t help us defeat fascism now. If Trump has a successful term economically, we’re finished. The American people have made it clear that the only thing they care about is the price of eggs. They’ll gladly accept whatever else MAGA wants to impose, up to and including a Trump family dynasty. (Watch for increasing coverage of Barron Trump.) The only way to preserve democracy, at least for a little while, is to let MAGA policy wreck the economy, which we know it will. We mustn’t try to stop it.

I think the demographics are what would be expected. News sources, various media outlets, give us an issue without even considering demographics.
The fracturing of the media landscape into smaller pieces that has occurred over the last 50 years unfortunately does not help in the overall on the information content people receive. In the case of journalism, we really need even handed editors and high journalistic standards from media. That takes money and institution building, and it is hard to leverage eyeballs for money when there is so much competition due to media fracturing across so many spaces. This competition also allows people to silo themselves off even to make-believe-worlds (or almost make-believe-worlds) like Fox News, because people will look for entertainment more than hard information content.
So, if Democrats set up shops in all these spaces, will that help democracy? Yes, because we will have at least 2 competitive parties politically. Will just that be an answer? No, because parties still can have their make-believe-worlds. In fact the optimal product for consumption (eye balls, money) is fiction. Fiction can always be more interesting than fact. Make-believe-world-building will always win over the hard pragmatism of solving problems of governance and intractable real world problems that we can only solve by negotiation.

the DEMS really need to listen to the younger politicians…the current leaders are older and appear to be stuck…i listened to BIDEN this morning…on tv. talking about a peacefull transition…it sounded so mealy-mouthed…we need a strong vigorous man to lead the party…HARRIS gave her all, we have to acknowledge that hispanic and black men are never ever going to elect a woman as POTUS…some will but most won’t. its ugly, but that is the USA. even INDIA and ISRAEL elected a women president…go figure.

There’s an old saying about “shit from shinola” and I think insofar as the Media is concerned the American people know that difference and prefer shinola because it goes down so easy. It’s difficult for me to believe that folks did not know what Trump was about so they voted for him. That they were not well informed. No matter how cocooned the American people were there’s no way FOX, Rogan, Jones or the other liars out there could have kept people from knowing. No way the American people could have avoided being informed given we had 4 years of Trump before. How many Americans are so ill informed that they did not know about Jan 6? Did not know about his convictions? Did not know where the economy was when he left office?
The Americans knew how horrible Trump was and is. That’s why they voted for him.

While I knew this was happening (kids getting exposed online to stuff – we had a central computer in the den so my kid’s online activity was done in front of us until high school so we tried…how naive that feels now), I don’t think I realized how our democracy would be affected by letting children on the internet.
You think bro cutlure is new to Gen Z? I grew up as a boomer. I was buried in westerns. I wore coon skin hats and played cowboys and indians. I dreamed of getting my first bb gun and later 22 rifle. We watched war movies and played war until we were called in after dark. As a teenager I was involved in male only sports. There is nothing more bro culture than football except wrestling. Yet somehow I became a liberal as an adult. How?
There is a moment after the teenage years when you become serious about a relationship and about doing an adult job that does something to a young man. Responsibility makes you think. A lot of the young men who voted for Trump haven’t yet embraced adult responsiblity. We went to an all volunteer Army so the compulsory service of the previous generations isn’t there to provide an entry into the adult world. If you are a young man who didn’t go to college how do you find a job that gives you a feeling of responsiblity and self worth? We make taking adult responsiblity very hard for young men who don’t have a clear path to adult responsibilty and are learning how to be men from some social media yaker. I think we need to look there.
The Democratic party is said to have become the party of college graduates. I think the real value of college is introducing young people into the adult world. Non college young men don’t have that path.
I don’t think this is a blame game moment.

The content on the right is often not overtly political, but wraps ideology into more broadly “cultural” fare.
This right here is the key variable. GOP messaging consistently spins key talking points into messaging that tells voters “what’s in it for me”. You can’t say 23 Nobel Prize Economists agree with your plan to the masses. You need to say tariffs on goods means higher prices on clothes, fuel, groceries. Saying tariffs take money out of your pocket is far more relatable than 23 Nobel Winning Economists.
Democrats also need to back the working class with policy that restricts immigration legal or illegal by saying. We will increase demand for domestic labor and increase the minimum wage. These are relatable messages vs Trump stopped the bill by calling his cronies.
Democrats need not be pro-immigration when the nation isn’t. Illegal immigration is an issue for many Central Americans who feel they waited to immigrate & followed the law & illegal immigrants are “jumping the line”
Democrats need to level the playing field & read the room. The vast majority of American voters are not pro-immigration.
Messaging needs to be clear & consistently communicate how it benefits the voter.

I agree. There should have been a team of 20-30 yo’s advising media campaign. They did get thru on TikTok & Brat but there needed to be far more ads/influence in niche markets. Call your daddy was great too. There simply wasn’t enough of that. The young or 40yo’s and younger get their news from multiple non-cable sources. And the Dems didn’t dominate that media space. These other news “sources” are equivalent of Rush Limbaugh.
