Dem Sens. Flag CIA’s ‘Secret Bulk’ Surveillance Program In Eyebrow-Raising Statement | Talking Points Memo

Can you blame him? We’re not exactly known for helping out our whistleblowers instead of locking them up. And he only ended up stuck in Russia because we leaned on every other government to ensure that he wouldn’t get safe passage through any allied airspace.

Hell, just look at this story-- even the request from our own damned Senators is all blacked out, and it’s been almost a year and the CIA hasn’t actually responded, which would be with another thing that has everything but the page numbers redacted.

I’m not blaming him. He made the choices he did.

Some people can’t separate Brazil Nut Glenn from Ed. Ed is living well and reunited with his long time American girl friend. He’s certainly not languishing in a Gulag. Probably relaxing on the Black Sea near Sochi for the winter. I’d sure take that over jail even though my Russian is pretty weak.

OT. I understand that it’s your job to be a bothsidesing, equivocating kind of fuck.

How does this sort of thing take 40 years to come out?

O/T: Listening to Restoring American Democracy

  • Jason Crow , U.S. Congressional Representative, Colorado
  • Liz Cheney , U.S. Congressional Representative, Wyoming
  • Moderator: Ryan Heath

The insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and all we have subsequently learned about attempts to reverse the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election, have revealed just how fragile American democracy is. Two US Representatives who were in session on that historic day and who are leaders on opposite sides of the aisle, will discuss their efforts to bring the truth to light and their perspectives on how we restore trust in American democracy.

No intent to suggest he is languishing in a gulag. I was dissing on the paradise known as Russia. You sound as though you have specific information. I admit I jumped on because I followed it closely at the time and really haven’t heard anything about him for some time. Is Russia keeping him incommunicado? He is no longer relevant, so the end result is the same. Do you think his actions had any lasting positive outcome?

Yes I think Ed did the right thing and the outcome has been good. But if the outcome had been bad it would still have been the “right thing”.

I think that was a different program. James Clapper straight-up lied to congress and Wyden couldn’t call him on it because that would require revealing what he learned in classified briefings.

Wyden’s been pretty solid on these issues for years. I trust his take.

Totally different time. These days, we tend to lock people up and throw away the key, regardless of whether they did the right thing.

That’s quite pecant!

Just to keep the record straight, the previous scandal was Wyden asking James Clapper about NSA spying on Americans in 2013. This story is about CIA spying that he just found out about in February 2021.

I’m looking at the Exec Order number - how are these typically numbered - are they sequential from the beginning of the Presidency (e.g., from George Washington’s time) or are they sequential by President? 12333 seems awfully high for a 14 month presidency.

@brian512, thanks - your Reagan note makes more sense.

Here’s a good read on it. Basically, it’s all in order from 1862 on.

That the CIA’s privacy and civil liberties officer Kristi Scott is a regular comedian notwithstanding, this sounds a lot like an offshoot of a similar NSA (National Security Agency or No Such Agency, your choice) program that was revealed long ago by IIRC author James Bamford and “shut down” (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) during the Shrubya years.
