Whether or not anyone is “cheering on” a recession it won’t much matter to the election results if there is one. Once upon a time an economic downturn meant the party in power was turned out. In the Trump era that is likely irrelevant.
What will play a determining factor is will the left go for Trump in the numbers they did in 2016? Some did so, as they stated, because they were bitter about the Dem primary. But many others did so because of Trumps trade policies despite all his odious traits.
There is no reason to think they won’t. The split between Moderate or “Centrist” and Left Dems has not narrowed, and Trump is pursuing the trade policies (anti-free trade) long supported by the Left.
Reporting on Delaney and by extension right wingers and particularly 45 is cheap and easy, doesn’t require much time. The outlets a lot of people here love to hate carry this news, the same outlets 45 calls “fake news” and “the enemy of the people.” IMO, TPM is the enemy of brain cells.
Hearing conservative democrats parrot republican talking points just points out the level of infiltration of the democratic party by right wingers that are a big part of why so many have turned away from democratic candidates.
If all her tossups go to Trump-the Dems eke out an 18 point victory in the EC.
Then again, if the Biden candidacy sets the Left’s hair on fire we could something like see this again:
Delaney is genuinely contemptible. Dude, if you want to belong to the trumpist party, go ahead and join them. What are you waiting for?
Can we simply stipulate that Delany is the most Liebermanesque of the current herd of 1%ers running for the Dem’s nom? I wonder if he’ll ‘get the hint’ from this little episode?
Not going to happen, but we will support him if the majority of voters pick him in primaries
Biden well may be it, by default. With possibly Harris as VP.
Which really wouldn’t be bad at all. Set up the next President, while remaining the “safe” choice that people feel comfortable voting for.
OK. Sure. Didn’t happen last time.
Every time I have posted that results table a Bernie supporter has told me “those were voters who never would have supported a Centrist anyway”.
So, I assume if there is a Centrist Dem candidate and no third party candidate this time, they’ll just vote Trump
Oh, Jeez.
This guy.
Yea I liked Ol’Georgie purchasing a 3 pack of tube socks, holding them up and stating that he did his part to revive the economy. Work very well, just like his marveling over a grocery store checkout scanner. And he was supposedly the “smart” one in that family.
I can’t imagine Harris with her smarts and her background and her ambition taking a back seat to anyone, and esp. not Joe. For all we know he’s still pissed about the busing dustup at the first debate and wouldn’t even consider her. Besides, soon enough she’ll be the senior senator from CA because Feinstein won’t live forever. Then Adam Schiff can run and win the junior seat.
At the same time Julian Castro is still standing and I think he’d be perfect as a Veep to anybody, young, Hispanic, from purple-ish Texas, and still young enough at 44 to run in 2028 at the top of the ticket. Full disclosure: I was disappointed HRC didn’t pick him.
Good grief, yes! I can’t like this comment enough! With all it’s growth, I would think TPM could do better. I’d love to hear more from/about the Democratic candidates who actually have a chance at winning the nomination (other than the 25 or 30 emails I get from them every day). Who cares what this idiot says?
Very fair points, and appreciate the analysis.
I’m just thinking that Biden would make an extra effort to pick a female, and a minority preferred, which would put Harris at the top of the list. Warren risks the “old folks” ticket, so that’s probably not a go. And someone like Stacy Abrams is maybe too risky at this point. She’s great, but she’s just “lost” (stolen) her last try, and hasn’t been on a big enough stage.
Picking Abrams would make it look like Joe is trying to hard. He had a chance to do the right thing by a black woman during the Thomas hearings and he didn’t. Joe’s apologies decades later were meaningless.
I bum rap TPM’s coverage so much I fully expect to get kicked off the boards, but I won’t go unless they refund my Prime payment.
Boeing CEO Dennis Muhlenberg who assured his 737 max was safe after two crashed immediately after takeoff and were grounded by most of the world comes to mind as a prime Upper Management archtype.
Judging 2019 Biden by 1990 standards is rather harsh, IMHO.
10000000% agree with the sentiment.
But the reality of the time is that things like sexual harassment weren’t taken in the same way they are now.
Biden is a product of his time. He’s not perfect, for sure. But he’s certainly the current “safe” choice that can knock out “grab 'em by the pussy”.
