Decision On Docking Ill-Fated Cruise Ships In FL Could Be Punted To Washington | Talking Points Memo

MIAMI (AP) — Passengers from an ill-fated South American cruise are anxious to disembark once they reach Florida, but Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state’s health care resources are already stretched too thin to take on another ship’s coronavirus caseload. The U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday that the decision would be punted to Washington if authorities can’t agree.

We cannot afford to have people who are not even Floridians dumped into South Florida using up those valuable resources,” DeSantis told Fox News on Monday.

It’s always so life affirming to see Christian charity on display.

“The captain said something like, ‘This is not a trip anymore. This is not a cruise. This is a humanitarian mission,’” she said.

And if DeSantis or Trump has a hand in making the decision it will be a floating tomb.

It’s a insult on our country to not be able to handle this easily.

FFS, dock them in Cuba and let healthy and post-quarantine passengers fly out of there. Cuba has the medical personnel to handle it and will do it for cash considerations and bragging rights.

It is, but its more of an indictment on the Conservatism that’s infected it since the day St. Ronald Reagan stood up and said the most dreaded words in the English language are: “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” This is all the result of what he and his supporters started.

I’m thinking it’ll be a cold day in hell before cruise ships put FL on their itinerary again. OTOH, it would be a cold day in hell before I ever booked a cruise anyways so maybe DeSantis is thinking ahead.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony called the situation a “humanitarian crisis” and asked commissioners at the Tuesday meeting not to decide based on emotion. Allowing the ship to dock would burden the local healthcare system and put residents at risk of additional exposure, he warned.

Um, Sheriff, about those spring break beaches in Broward Country that you didn’t close? Here’s a heat map of the phones that were ON THE BEACH at Ft Lauderdale spring break week, one week later.

Just FYI: Carnaval (owner of Holland America) vessels fly flags of convenience: 18 of Panama, six in the Bahamas and two in Malta. Its headquarters are in Miami. The North American division of Carnival Corporation has executive control over the corporation and is headquartered in Doral, Florida.

Sort of explains why Toadglans wanted to bail out (no pun intended) the cruise industry. Their executives are probably members of his bedbug-ridden resorts.

ETA I wonder if Stephen Miller has suggested towing the ships out into international waters and forgetting about them? He seems like a ghost ship kind of guy.

Shouldn’t that be state’s right Christian charity on display?

Remember the crew. They’re berthed in communal rooms, 4 or more to a room. They eat at elbow’s distance apart at long tables. They work in cramped workshops, laundries, galleys. And, they can’t get home. They can’t get transportation to their home country, home city, even if they’re allowed off the ship. Replacement crews can’t get from home to the ship, either.

And he likes all the non Floridian money these people spend. Which is why he didn’t close the beaches and let infected folks loose on the rest of the country. Complete scumbag.

Seriously, dock the ships and take everyone, in isolation, to a military base where they can be quarantined for three weeks.

I think he’s more the “send them to puerto rico and quarantine the island, forever” type.

And Jesus said to the lepers, “Sorry. There’s no room at the inn.”

I couldn’t help but think of this terrible incident. A ship carrying German Jews had to turn back to Europe because Cuba wouldn’t let them in.

If punted to the feds, it’ll be directed to land at the nearest blue state - Virginia? Or Maryland, given that their governor just volunteered by contradicting Trump on problems with getting tests.

Isn’t there a Democratic state where they can send this ship?

Wow, DeSantis is just awful. Florida’s economy revolves around tourism like few other U.S. states – Hawaii, maybe, might beat them. Port of Miami is the busiest cruise ship port in the world. And we all know how irresponsible he’s been over spring break and the amusement parks…
