Cuomo Accuser Pushes Back On Guv: ‘He Has Not Apologized For Sexually Harassing Me’ | Talking Points Memo

Charlotte Bennett, one of the women accusing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, said on Thursday that she did not perceive the governor’s Wednesday statement addressing multiple allegations of inappropriate conduct and workplace sexual harassment as an apology.

The first half of that statement destroys the second half of that statement.

The story seems to be constantly changing. More and more of her ‘beliefs’. “Without explicitly saying it, he implied to me that I was old enough for him and he was lonely,”.

Sounds familiar. Donut? Usually the guilty party makes light of the facts by issuing an ‘if’ type statement then says sorry (not sorry).

Im thinking he knows time is not on his side. Who would be his Dem successor? Who could continue in 2022? There doesn’t seem to be anyone. I ask because I’ve read that, if elected, a Tepub governor would pardon the Orange and that’s his hope.

Cuomo can’t “apologize” to Bennett as that would be a confession of guilt and would be used against him. He also can’t say that she’s lying because then he’d be open to claims of defamation (see, Donald Trump and E. Jean Carroll.) Hence, his carefully worded response.

(Also, Charlotte Bennett isn’t looking for an apology from Andrew Cuomo. She wants him out as governor.)

Of course she can’t possibly know what his fullest intentions were. She’s not a mind reader. However, to imply strongly suggests the truth.

“some of the things I have said have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation,” adding, “To the extent anyone felt that way, I am truly sorry about that.”

A bully and a coward.

The Andrew Cuomo I know and love.

No one is accusing Cuomo of sexual ASSULT and that should be made clear. His conduct is not anything I would do but it was more crude than harassing. No one has said he put women in a “do it” if you want to keep your job or that he retaliated against those that refused him. What he did was wrong and uncalled for but it’s not the rape / assault folks are trying to make it out to be.

But fucking damn it…is it not possible to take action against these men more proximate to their sins? This method of waiting years while the guy rises to a position of power then coming forward is happening a bit much. It sets the mess up for minimization and painting it as politically motivated. It also makes it damn near impossible to prove. Can this be done another way?

This crap will always lead to the demise of a Democrat accused of it but GOP’ers survive it. Think Franken vs Trump.

Any chance someone here might report more on DeSantis peddling the vaccine to his donors and friends and simply not reporting Covid deaths? How about his harrassing whistleblowers with SWAT-team like raids?

No? Guess DeSantis hasn’t done something unforgiveable, like make a fool of himself at a wedding.

PS–Plenty of news about DeSantis’ approval rating, about his being an heir to Trump, etc. Is the “liberal media” at it again?

I agree that none of the accusations so far amount to rape but I am not aware that anyone suggests otherwise.

Assault is a different matter. I have not studied the three public cases enough to say if the word applies.

Would be nice, I agree, and for people to speak up courageously about their experiences – this will help.

What Pol accused of this stuff has not uttered similar words? Cuomo’s at phase 1 now. At that phase non-apology apologies are what’s in the book. AS the mess develops contrition gets serious and he offers real apology. Then he is forced out.

What you say is often true and some of his accusers are from his past but Bennet was a health policy adviser in the Democratic governor’s administration until November. That’s pretty recent.

I haven’t read that Cuomo pushed on with a woman after she said no or stop. If he did that’s a different game and jail not the Gov’s office is where he needs to be.

Time for the general discussion of sexual harassment on the job to move to facts and nuances. Al Franken demise has worthwhile lessons.

Does one “feeling uncomfortable” mean it is harassment?

Is political timing a significant issue?

If you’re suggesting that Andrew Cuomo, bully and coward, is not unique, well, I agree completely.

He’s gotta go. The behavior is just so utterly stupid I can’t even fathom it. Go find younger women who DONT work for you FFS. How can someone be so fucktarded?

Yes.

As previously noted, all three cases so far that are known to the public occurred after the not-so-long-ago collapse of Cuomo’s last long-term sexual relationship.

What Ms. Bennett said rings true:

“Without explicitly saying it, he implied to me that I was old enough for him and he was lonely,” Bennett said.

Andrew Cuomo has always screwed over Democrats. So eff him and the legacy horse he rode in on.

It is utterly stupid, actually more then stupid for a ‘mature’ person but would replace him? I happen to do a search to see who could yesterday. Alessandra Biaggi seemed the best bet but what does this Canadian know?

I will admit to a bit of schadenfreude.

As for what Cuomo should do now … at the moment I don’t see him helping himself — never mind the people who work(ed) with him.
