Are our homegrown Bible-thumpers Protestants? If they are the drill is to read the book and understand it as the word of God. I’m a huge agnostic, had serious health scares without any wavering in my non-faith, and I understand that much. You help the sick, you help the poor, you help the prisoner, you help people who need help. If you’re into Trump for the Supreme Court justices well, bad news there bubba, that’s temporal power you’re into and it’s one of Satan’s temptations. When you get hit by a bus tomorrow it’s off to the bad place with you. These people have heard this stuff all their lives. They know they’re fucking up.

I wouldn’t mind giving Trump’s eulogy.
I think I’d start with something like, “I come to bury Trump, not to praise him. The evil men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. Trump’s bones are going to be lonely as fuck.”

We should remember that nearly every important job worthy of Senate confirmation at DHS is ow filled in an “acting” capacity. It’s a deliberate trump tactic. He said he wants it that way.

Yes, they are supposed to “read the book and understand it,” but even so, most denominations seem to end up falling back on a (largely) patriarchal hierarchy in which you are supposed to trust the judgment of your elders. You have your Jerry Fallwell Jrs. and your Pat Robertsons all backing Trump to the hilt, so obviously the truth is that you must believe Trump rather than your lying eyes.
Or so it seems to me on the outside looking in, not being a Protestant of any stripe while being comfortable in my atheism.

I’m not claiming any particular goodness of heart, mind you. It’s just that once you know what people suffer, what abused animals suffer, what any sentient being suffers, when it’s deliberate it makes you frantic to stop it somehow and yet you know it continues. Punishing the perpetrators after the fact isn’t good enough. This sort of thing drove Ivan Karamazov mad and it’s not great for us actual humans who know about it either.

This man is my Congressman. And I have never been prouder of him and the people who vote for him. I worry about his health–John Lewis seems to be a steamroller, capable of any indignity. Elijah is so emotional–and god I love him for that–but it takes a toll. If you pray, pray for this good man. If you don’t send your good thoughts his way. America is a good place. Let’s remember that.

I often admire what Mencken wrote, but it is good to remember that he was racist as hell, and possessed of not a few really awful qualities.

All I could think about watching that was the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram Shock Experiment become a real life scenario in these facilities by the border patrol, except the abuses are also happening to little children as well who have no defenses against that kind of trauma and cruelty.
It is so disheartening and enraging as well to see a man take no responsibility for what is happening under his watch other than to feign ignorance and say he’s conducting an investigation (which I seriously doubt will result in any significant changes). AOC asked if those guards that had posted violent and racist shit on Facebook had lost their jobs. He never did answer her questions about that.
