Cummings First African-American Rep To Lie In State At Capitol

You are absolutely right.
The man deserves the respect of it.

I’m not saying respect is in order, I’m just pointing out the facts of history.

Mr Cummings deserves nothing but respect.

That’s what museums and history books are for.

“We can do so much better than this”, as Elijah Cummings would say.

I agree 100%, I thought you were talking about JD.
Sorry if I read that wrong.

Yes, in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court.

Statuary Hall is very museum-ish as it represents the history of the Congress and the people who served in it.
The whole Capitol reeks of museum-worthy historical displays, including the building itself.

Forget Jefferson Davis, I’m worried about the current House membership.

If the feral Trumper Reps like Jordan and Gaetz do anything to disrespect Rep. Cummings, the Sergeant at Arms should throw them in the Congressional jail cell. I have zero faith that they have the sense or basic human decency to allow others to grieve and honor a great man in peace.

I hope I am wrong, or at least that the R leadership is smart enough to muzzle them for a couple of days.

I expect this solemn event to draw some incoherent tweet-fire from President Ragey McRage.

Leave a pound of hamburger on the kitchen counter near a couple dogs. And then hope they have the decency to leave it alone.

He’ll have bigger crowds at his funeral. Just ask him, he’ll tell you.

A giant has fallen. Rest in peace, Elijah Cummings.

warrant & deserve - yes - yes - - suspect that Cummings becomes the first because of his merits - and - because he died while actively serving - this is the death of a current member of congress - and a highly respected one - it is a case where “inside the beltway” there are many many many people who were stunned - who have been numb and saying “I can’t believe it … I was speaking with him just the other day …” there is a lot of fresh acute pain in Washington - and as is often said about funerals - they are less for the departed and more for the aching hearts seeking comfort.

in no way does this explain away the others in the past who deserved this level of honor … simply

Thank you for that.

Right.

Lying in state is the tradition in which the body of a dead official is placed in a state building, either outside or inside a coffin, to allow the public to pay their respects. It traditionally takes place in the principal government building of a country, state, or city. While the practice differs among countries, a viewing in a location other than the principal government building may be referred to as lying in repose.[1]

Rep. Cummings deserves every honor and respect our government can muster. Lying in state is a start.

Tell me Trump won’t desecrate this man’s memory by showing up.

exactly. Jordan was in the house for only 6 years (1973-79). Chisholm for 14 years (1969-83). Both died well after they’d left the House. And perhaps more importantly, both died nowhere near washington DC. (Jordan in Texas, Chisholm in Fl (and is buried with her husband in Buffalo, NY).

Cummings, on the other hand, has been in Congress for 23 years, died while serving, and lived relatively close to DC.

Actually, those were Cummings’ final words.
