COVID Wrecked 2020 Voter Registration Efforts But Then Came The BLM Protests | Talking Points Memo

The last few months have been challenging for voter registration groups that rely on in-person operations to help people get on the rolls.

This has got to be making for some stained Rethugliklan panties.

Also, many states released one of those weird square black-and-white scanny thingies this year that people have been taking on their cell phones to the marches for others to scan, which takes them to the state’s voter registration site. Ouch.

If you’ve been particularly horrified with the Trumpian disasters of the past few months, you can always vote for Joe Biden.

This is very good news. If the young people out there in the streets all get to the polls, this will be a landslide defeat for the Republicans – all up and down the ballot. And every one of these kids knows they can register online in two minutes flat. And if they don’t they’re being told. Protest organizers are repeatedly telling them they have to vote.

You know who isn’t registering voters at these protests? The GOP. Decades of racist dick baggery doesn’t quite appeal to the protesters.

My daughter is facing the problem of closed DMV. Her license expired in CT in February, during kidding season. She went on line to renew but couldn’t remember her PIN. So now it’s June, she wants to register for a paper ballot for November and can’t because her DL status is expired. Not sure what other identification will work for her.

I can see Trump’s next tweet now. “The BLM protests are intended to help DEM voter registration. George Floyd is an Antifa plant.”

If you look in a mirror and say “David Duke” three times, Ronna McDaniel appears.

At this point, I can’t see where Republican voter enthusiasm will come from. You have to be an Incel to get excited by Trump’s blame-others-for-everything personality. And down-ballot Republicans have had to say they don’t read the news or social media to distance themselves from him so often that they sound like Sarah Palin ("All of them, Katie!). A slogan like “the economy would be awesome if there were no coronavirus,” will not push someone to come to the polls. The reported 15% drop in of Evangelical favorability can’t be reversed by using Bibles for dumbbells.

By contrast, you could put me in a Houdini box with chains sunk under water in an alligator swamp, and I would find my way to the polls.

Sounds like pay-per-view gold! I share the sentiment.

They reopened the DMV here, they are just doing it solely by appointment which is actually a lot better anyway.

Any idea when they might open up where your daughter is? This strikes me as a Catch 22 for her and other voters and not a good thing.

We’re doing it. We’ve had strong results in the past two weekends during protests in our county.

The GOP never registers voters here (or elsewhere I suspect), so that’s not a big deal. The big deal is we are registering almost exclusively Democratic voters, which, at “normal” events we never get close to doing in our red county.

Yay!

There have been lots of calls from leaders of the protests to vote vote vote! And I love it that we are registering voters.

I’ve already had this conversation with my wife. If I’m in the hospital on November the 3rd, you wheel my gurney down to the polling station.

hahahahahaha God I hope you’re not in the hospital.

Me too, but trust me, I’m voting.

Not only that, once registered they stay registered. They can vote again in two years, or sooner, for local elections. Registration is a gift that keeps on giving, if the voters exercise their right.

And we have to make sure they do just that.
