That’s actually funny…
RIP Justice David Souter.
“80% tariffs. Bessent’s decision (he’s your fall guy).” Down from 148% with no concessions. Ultimate deal-maker. 11 dimensional chess.
Why is Roberts thinking about “innovation” in the Constitution? It implies that innovation as such is the key measure of value. If the truths of human rights are self-evident, as the Declaration of Independence insists, then who cares what is new, as opposed to what is permanent, immanent, & true? If freedom is an essential human value and rights are really inalienable, why is the focus on the innovation and not the broader construction of separation of powers, which has an older provenance (Magna Carta’s motivations, etc.)?
They’re just words, John, Blah, blah, blah. You did this to yourselves, and you keep supporting him.
Yup!
Here’s a rub about judicial independence: Roberts & company abdicated it when they mangled the part of the 14th Amendment to that same Constitution, which on its face barred Donald Trump from seeking re-election after his insurrection in 2021. There is no getting around that. Use it or lose it. They didn’t use their independence at a pivotal point moment when the Court’s independence meant something, and now here comes mob rule, rule by crime.
Would upheaval have resulted, had Roberts & company ruled that Colorado could keep Trump off the ballot?
What. Have. We. Got. Now?
Metastatic tyranny, I’d call it.
The utter destruction and vandal sacking of U.S. cultural institutions is beginning. A person could say, “where is the evidence of it?” The evidence is in the destruction of approximately innocent lives, and certainly lives that have no lesser rights as human beings than yours or mine, as their freedom is suffocated, moment by moment, in foreign prisons, and in lesser acts of destruction as freedom is attenuated, first, at home, as if chloroform is being applied to a trapped victim; and an ugly threat of career destruction, penury, and when someone crosses the dissipated scoundrel, terrorizing mobs (Nancy Pelosi’s husband being attacked by a lunatic with a hammer, etc.); the evidence is in the lies and the claims against the First Amendment, and the perversions that are being imposed on our history; the evidence is in the banning of books in service academies; in the destruction of American science as such (and who will want to work in the USA in the service of the destruction of freedom, in fields that are not currently under direct attack?).
Of course everything is backwards about this administration’s hangers-on and fellow-destroyers. We hear that “Western Civilization” must be defended – and this has to be our first warning that western civilization is their main focus of attack. Consider that there is not a lot of Christianity in their Christianity. Where are “the least among us” in the administration’s priorities? They’re in transitional prisons on track to be deported, and where lo & behold they turned out to be, as our Declaration asserted, our equals, minorities who have served the country at arms and in culture and industry and science with the highest valor are being erased.
This is wholesale destruction, and conceptually thoroughgoing, of America as we understand it to be, of the America that actually was, its memory and heritage, of the American Constitutional republic, and of freedom.
If the courts truly are independent? They are independent in the past – before they were packed by an anti-Constitutional, royalist movement under the stalking horse of a false federalism. They could have been independent had their leader, John Roberts, actually led.
Did we avert mayhem by ceding that part of the 14th Amendment?
Did Roberts?
We have an illegitimate President who is sacking the republic. Crimes have been committed at highest scale, crimes are ongoing, and crimes are escalating and accelerating at a pace that at some point must meet its end when people who do not tolerate tyranny at last decide that they have had enough. A court may be permissive, but reality is that human beings can only take so much, and the court & the Republican Party & their Wormtongue-grade liars in moneymedia have opened the Pandora’s box of crime against freedom itself and against people that will be hard to close, and the more thorough their success, the closer to an entire conflagration on our continent that destroys us materially as assuredly as this anti-human movement has destroyed its target spiritually. Their victory, should they consummate it, will destroy them. Us, too, of course, all of us. But its principle of escalating crime against freedom under the color of false pretenses cannot be sustained permanently.
The trouble is in no way averted by letting this criminal back into office.
A little bit of fear of the mob goes a long way to quietly coerce someone. Force is fraud’s friend. Why else do criminals call people on the phone pretending to be the police, or the IRS? They’re using fear.
It looks like Roberts must have felt it.
Because no insurrectionist can constitutionally run for or take office.
Rights as such are worth a philosophical & philological review. How they are so, what actuates their force as such, is worth reviewing. One strand of philosophy says that “mistakes are defined as the acts that are corrected.” Mistakes inherently get corrected, in this view.
But if those self-evident rights are to be made whole in a general way, and in a peaceable balance by which they do not trammel each other (as if each were absolute), is a real open question. We’re going into one of those periods of history where all the mistakes are tried, by people too arrogant and ignorant to realize what they are trying is folly.
And what you said, Scoutmom, does tell. “They’re just words, John. Blah, blah, blah.”
He had his chance.
He was on point for all of us. And he listened to counsel that was given in error, or to a fearful part inside of him, and he reasoned his way into a mistake.
And we have an insurrectionist President, operating a coup state.
Maybe Roberts now appeals to the “spirit of innovation” in the words above. I’d rather see the spirit of freedom in balance and moderation, personally, and I’d rather the past came back for a do-over in so many ways, right now, because this revolution from above, this revolution from the rich, is on track to wipe out our civilization and wipe America literally from the map. A legalistic singularity is here – right now – a coup state, where law is lawless. Someone if not God, have mercy on the several hundred million here if we do not put this place right.
Not really. Two years ago I could walk and do normal stuff. House keeping, my plants, hiking …shopping. Now Mrs darr is saddled with many things. But I am slowly coming back to strength.
One has
Constitutionally countenanced?
The challenge, of course, is that if those who want to take over the system use violence, threats, and unlawful action, and the other side has no reciprocal means of applying force (so, courts not, say, arresting lawbreaking officials, etc.), then the unlawful force will materially dissolve the lawful institutions.
At some point, some lawbreaking official will commit a crime against a court or other law-abiding official, and someone’s family will say they have had enough, and they will respond in like kind. Hatfields-and-McCoys. That’s what the coup state is risking and laying the gauntlet down, and daring anyone to do.
When only one notional “side” will honestly act in good faith and abide by the law, they are bucking for a state of affairs in which no law can protect them, either. What civilization can do in its own defense without force to countervail evil is a real question.
Yes, this X 1,000
That was a shout out to anyone who thinks it was Biden’s obligation to step aside.
That was not me, but when he did I fully supported Harris.
Which white race is genetically more superior – US or UK?
Good advice.
That was not me during the primary, but it was me by the time it became clear that campaigning all over the country was going to be extremely exhausting on top of his day job as POTUS. At that point, I was praying for him to withdraw and for Harris to become the candidate.
I have an all gender bathroom in my house…I bet Nancy Mace does also.
The brits know very well that there is no “major trade deal” untill it goes to Congress and is ratified by them. The Brits know what our Constitution says and what it means a whole lot better than Donnie Trump or any of his co-conspirators.
Typical bottom of the barrel pick. Donnie Trump does not even know any real, accomplished, honest people b because anyone with any taste, integrity or intelligence avoids him and his “crew” like the plague.
