Cotton Pushes For Military Deployment | Talking Points Memo

Hope Biden and the people who write campaign slogans consider this ready made argument.

America is at a low ebb. Pain and destruction strangle hopes and dreams of people across the country. People are dying — alone from a terrible virus or from a knee on the neck in full public view. Cities burn, destroying businesses and inflaming divisions. Tens of millions are out of work. The president makes it all worse.

Hmm have we ever seen a hinged Trump?

“unlimited power”

So missiles, Apache attack helicopters and 50 cal. machine guns opening up on the protesters?

How far down the fascist rabbit hole have we fallen?

Stars-and-bars waiving Southerners who celebrate rebel treason calling for use of the Insurrection Act?

Irony isn’t just dead, it’s been tortured, dismembered, and stuffed in a wood chipper.

Careful there, check his military record.

True. No.

Anarchy? Cotton keeps using that word. I don’t think it means what he thinks it means.

As has been on display from the beginning, it’s all he knows: lying about his electoral victory and inauguration size were never about differences in perspective. They were about control, of the narrative if possible and, if not, then of the news cycle.

Would have been better if he had died though. He is one dangerous rattlesnake.

Trump has been working without a hinge from the get go.

ETA @lastroth beat me to that softball.

I have been telling people who consider the lockdown, wearing a mask, or curfews because of the protests that none of that is tyranny, and that we’d know tyranny when it happened. Deploying the US military in an active policing role in American cities (where the liberals and minorities live) will be that tyranny.

The Guard is a state organization that helps keep the peace, that’s its Constitutional role (basically the replacement for the militias of the 1780s), so supporting the police in quelling protests is appropriate (if they do it right obviously). The military has no role inside the nation’s borders unless we have been invaded or have an actual insurrection, neither of which are happening or are going to happen. The call by some Republicans for our military to be deployed against citizens should put fear into every American citizen, because that is the start down a path where they try to use that force to shut down our democracy “for our safety”. Local curfews are really for our safety, troops patrolling our streets will be an invasion force, and that’s not somewhere we should allow the nation to go. If people like Cotton get their way, then we are a very short step from a cancelled election in November and a real dictatorship with martial law in effect.

So Trump will be replacing Barr’s Duracell batteries with Energizer’s?

I listened to the clip they have up.

What the hell did he mean that they are going to do something people have never seen before?

I don’t even want to know what action Barr is getting or doing.

Heil, Senator Cotton.

Does he want the 82nd Airborne to parachute in? And would a mountain warfare unit be suitable for urban attack? Perhaps he’s just naming the first groups to come to mind, but some of this seems really unsuitable for what should be a peacekeeping mission. Of course, he doesn’t want peacekeeping, but those seem unlikely.

He wants to send in the military…I hear the song of Jade Helm playing in the background.

Cotton is taking advantage of the void that Trump has created. This is posturing for his eventual run in 2024. And yep, he will be running as a proto Fascist, Law and Order, candidate.

The interesting part to me, is that he IS taking advantage of the void that Trump has created.
