I don’t think it matters whether protests are happening so much as there’s a federal building, so they can deploy as they see fit. Can’t remember who posted this here at TPM yesterday, but it’s quite telling. Key quote: “We can send people down to defend the federal function, keep our courts open, and if they see any crime being committed in front of them, then, as law enforcement officers, they can make the arrest. Our object was just to get federal law enforcement down there and play it by ear.”

What I have been hearing about shootings is that they started up again. The shooters and victims are civilians and black, they aren’t going after federal buildings. And I hate to quote Talking Heads, “the same as it ever was”.
Important to note there: he specifically refers to it as an end-around declaring martial law. I’ve warned they would try it and we are witnessing them do so while pretending that calling it something different means it’s not the same thing.
