Sorry, I should have added a /s tag to my comment. The entire premise of “Alligator Alcatraz” is obvious theatrical bullshit designed to appeal to an audience suckled on “reality” TV and Fox News. We are, after all, talking about imprisoning people some of whom within the past ten years have done some combination of traversing the Darien Gap, making their way up through the entirety of Central America, avoiding narco gangs in several countries, crossing the Rio Grande, making their way through the Sonoran desert, and then living in the shadows until some unfortunate incident landed them in DeSantis’s cruel experiment. Wet feet and minor wildlife encounters are probably not a substantial impediment to escape. As in most prisons, the real obstacle is a combination of fences and guards with guns. The site, the alligators, etc is all theatrics.
The only real security benefit of the site itself is the relative ease of controlling access of media, congress, and other observers. Otherwise, this thing could have been located in any abandoned Walmart or grocery store in the country. If cruelty, theatrics, and (probably) contractor fraud weren’t the entire point, that is.

For me, it’s the Alligator part → jokes about teaching them how to run from them, merch with cool looking gators with sunglasses just waiting to take a bite – it’s that part that I find so offensive. Maybe Everglads Auschwitz?
