But this is going to be a huge gut check for Democrats. 2 of the 3 front runners have all expressed support for Trump pulling out of Syria. Yes, it was months ago (largely because none of them has had to address any foreign policy since some theoretical quesitons very early on), and sure, they can flip these positions to say “No, don’t pull out now and abandon our allies”…but even a novice republican strategist can blow a hole a mile wide through that.
Once the Kurds are wiped out Trump will announce that he is withdrawing from any support for the Ukraine so Putin will be able to walk right in. It is as though we elected Putin and Trump is just his surrogate.
There has to be a balance, a combined consultation with allies and an aversion to lies. Trump fails on all counts and only a Purity Patrol Prick would go for this BoneHead Move.
OT Bernie was not really interested in Foreign Policy. I could tell that from Jump.
Those are pretty old quotes you have there. As a general statement most everybody agrees we can’t stay in Syria forever. What have the Democrats said about abandoning the Kurds to the tender mercies of the Turks?
I’ve been raising the more general question for months…its not only the complete lack of experience on foreign policy matters, its the myopic focus of every candidate on exclusively domestic issues.
So now we have an actual foreign policy crisis thrust on the news stage…how are they going to react? Piecemeal? Backtracking earlier comments? Ignore it? Or present a comprehensive foreign policy agenda?
I understand the “nuance” position behind Warren and Sanders statements (and, gonna disagree with you…both of their statements are saying the same thing in terms of policy. Pull out ASAP, but make sure ISIS is gone first). The problem is, this position is weak…both in terms of having their cake and eating it too, and in terms of not part of any overarching foreign policy.
Trump is a coward on all fronts. This is a man who is too scared to fire anybody in person. It’s been clear since the staged air strike on empty positions two years ago that he’s a weakling in foreign affairs. Worse, he’s compromised and can predictably be relied upon to do the most pro-Russian thing he can get away with doing.
He doesn’t like democracy at home or abroad and cozies up to dictators.
So, yeah, let’s get him out of office ASAP. His incompetence at foreign affairs is, by itself, grounds for impeachment. (But thankfully there are easier arguments to make.)
