PLEASE… If John Roberts gave a shit about ethics he would have done something YEARS ago. John Roberts is the WORST cheif justice in recent times, he is a pure partisan. Asking him to do something is futile.
Senator Durbin, Democratic Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, want Chief Justice Roberts to conduct an investigation of his colleague Clarence Thomas? Instead, why doesn’t Durbin call upon himself to retire, in favor of someone, anyone, who would have more common sense about Republican abuse of blue-slips? That would be far, far more productive.
P.S to Roberts: And we haven’t forgotten your sleazy very inadequate investigation of the Dobbs leak. Pretty obvious to us where that leak came from (Thomas still can’t keep his pants zipped?).
Spokespeople for Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
I think you mean the “Spokespeople for Jordan and Graham were seen fleeing for the hills”.
“If “the Court does not resolve this issue on its own, the Committee will consider legislation to resolve it,” the letter said”
Maybe a better approach would be to let the SC resolve the issue itself, and then submit the original question and the SC response to congressional analyses. When that is done, or better right now, create and institute a binding ethical code of conduct for the SC, one that contains a strong enforcement mechanism.
John Roberts couldn’t care less about judicial ethics. If he did, he easily could have years ago supported adoption by the Court of the federal judiciary code of ethics. But he hasn’t.
Why? John Roberts is just another run of the mill right winger, except he does a pretty good job hiding it ‘cause he’s polished.
One could almost make the argument that not adopting such a code of ethics would make one not particularly well suited for the Supreme Court. Also seems like a relevant question to ask at a confirmation hearing. Ah, silly me.
At a minimum, regardless of the SCOTUS perks, arrogance, haughtiness, Thomas has attracted the attention (notoriety) which should have come his way years ago
If “the Court does not resolve this issue on its own, the Committee will consider legislation to resolve it,” the letter said.
…and there’s the nut graf, because they know damned well Roberts isn’t gonna do shit and can’t do shit. Roberts could “investigate” and find oceans of evidence ginni’s spouse is crookeder than the reanimated bones of spiro agnew, and he wouldn’t be able to do shit about it and would look weak and pathetic in the process. So he ain’t gonna do it. But the senate committee has to make the gesture towards demanding roberts “do something!” before proceeding to write some ethics regulations that they’re already planning. Note however that any ethics regulations have to get through the qevin-led House, so this is largely political theater.
You want to get mad at somebody, get mad at A) ginni’s spouse, who did the dirty for nearly 3 decades, and B) pick any 16 GOP senators you like, because they will never never ever vote to convict during the impeachment trial of a supreme court justice unless they are guaranteed a GOP-nominated replacement.
C) anyone trying to blame this situation on “the democrats” (this has already been done by two TPM users) will get slapped upside the head with the textual equivalent of a wet grouper.
Whatever Thomas’ situation is right now, over his stint at SCOTUS, he was remarkably consistent with accompanying his rulings with relatively sparse summaries and commentary…
During that time, I attributed some of this to his personal preferences, but, whatever they were, the Thomas style (especially juxtaposed with that of more demonstrative Justices) served him well, given his accomplishment of flying under the Radar…
So ginni’s spouse had on average just over four clerks per year, turning them over like apple fritters. Just askin, did any of these clerks accompany him on any of the billionaire vacay largesse? Or ride along with the justice when a corporate jet just happened to be going his way when he wanted to make a quick trip to another city to give a lecture or lay a malediction on a gathering of young federalists?
