Company Taking Over COVID Data May Not Be Up To The Task

Wow, ARG (“B” rated pollster by FiveThirtyEight, even though I can’t help myself thinking “Arrrrrgh!” everytime I see their poll) now shows Trump at a god-awful 36-60 approval!

When this company shits the bed (likely on purpose) on data, we might actually see a net -25 point Trump approval rating.

OK the company is real - see below - They are not morons … but they are running their ass off to compete in their existing situation - - hard to imagine how they will take on such a huge increase in load / scope / urgency - in a situation where there is NO allowance of ramp-up time …

good luck to their current customer base - If I was a current customer - I would be looking for a back up option because I would have zero confidence that my needs would be given proper attention - since all of their resources will be sucked up with this boondoggle over-reach

Thing is, when you collect long term observations you need to be consistent at all stages in the collection to minimize “experimental error.” Just by making this change, the dats could be compromised to a measurable extent. It’s madness.

When do the actions and decisions of the President leave the political realm and become criminal in nature? He has allowed a company to take over tasks that were done by an agency that has governmental oversight but is staffed by medical and scientific expertise. The data that are being generated are fundamentally necessary for the revising and development of best practice procedures. Without such data, more people will die.

From another posting:

In case we have forgotten this link:

Perspective | Trump’s covid-19 inaction killed Americans. Here’s a counter…

The president needs to be held accountable for his actions. A death clock measures how many deaths he is responsible for. The Republican Party is equally responsible as the Republican leadership in the Senate allows the President to act as he does.

private technology firm that some experts say could be ill-equipped for the task

Being ill-equipped is almost irrelevant. Even if the firm is supremely well-equipped, you still have the essential problem: the Trump administration very intentionally is lying to the public about the monumental pandemic crisis they are making worse – lying for the single reason of helping get Trump reelected.

Yup Thiel.

Palantir is trying to help organize the information with a new platform called HHS Protect, which will be run by another private company called TeleTracking. This partnership has effectively replaced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network, per the Trump administration’s orders to hospitals to stop reporting their information to it.

My first thoughts too.

Plus: they have been briefed on what to filter out. Grandpa died of covid-related breathing problems? Nah…he died of kidney failure. Only old people die from the virus so let’s change 24 to 94… And so on and so forth…

True Story from Another Underpaid Hero

My sister-in-law received a call from a customer, who said she had been exposed to the virus. She asked if someone could select her things, so she’d just have to pick them up. Of course, the store has curbside pick-up.

Shortly afterward, my sister-in-law was called to service, where she discovered the woman, coming in to pick up her things. Well… a discussion ensued, starting with my sister-in-law telling the woman she didn’t need to come in, and shouldn’t have, since she had been exposed.

The woman said she never said that.

Well… a discussion ensued, which got testy somewhat, but, after my sister-in-law reamed out the lady for endangering other customers, she left, and the lady went to the cash register. There, the lady admitted that she had told that to my sister-in-law. The lady just wanted someone to do her shopping for her.

This is the America Trump and the Republicans are making. No rules. No values.

Looks like the CEO is not a frequent contributor, but I’ll let everyone guess which party he donates to when he does. (Hint: “Man on Dog”)

What, if any, public access to the data will be supported? Is this a stop to JHU and others doing data mining to keep the information easily available. Hospitals have to ask permission to inform their State government???

It’s been said many times… Follow the money.

In this case follow the lies as well. This is a cover up operation. Trump thinks he can make it look like the virus is retreating. Thiel’s on board to help.

That’s kinda a scary word to be used in conjunction with a shit-ton of American Citizen’s private health data.

Considering we usually use it to help us find and blow the fuck out of terrorists.

What does this company remind me of… Oh, right.

It’s like miscreants repertory troupe. The same people always show up. Like when Mrs VH and I watch Masterpiece Theatre and I say, “Oh, that actor again, he was in the last Masterpiece production as Lord Fortheringgay.”

Where is Deborah Birx in all this?

I’m less concerned about their ability to scale up and manage the data (which is likely to be questionable at best) as I am about Congress’ oversight ability into how the collect, manage, and report that data. Would love to know just what access the House (in particular) has to all covid-related information this company collects, what the information is and if they’re allowed to give or sell that data to other private companies.
