Yes, but the essence of the conservative movement is not academic excellence or intellectual achievement. The essence of the conservative movement is buying shills in every domain of human action, the better to proselytize on behalf of Rule by Money.
This was part of the genius of James Buchanan, who was the architect of the Koch wingnut network. He’s also the guy who turned George Mason U into an ideologue factory. At one point, the president of the university begged Buchanan to please include a little more real math in his econ curriculum, because graduates of the department were unemployable outside of conservative think tanks.
They were literally too busy brewing and stewing in Pelerin kool-aid to learn statistics.

Also consistent with his Austrian School orientation, Mr Hibbs gave no real thought to the problem of how to adjudicate conflicting claims made by these two entities who are both fighting for the same money. Evidently, his thought process was: “1. private competition; 2. instant, permanent success.”
Instead, he just threw some red meat into the kennel and asserted with self-importance, “This Will Work Perfectly.”
Typical oligarch: perfectly happy with the world so long as everyone else is too busy fighting over his table scraps to consider whether it’s right or fair for him to get the whole pie while everyone else starves.

Their entire economics department is just a Koch propaganda mill. No one with ties to it should be considered serious economists.
Unfortunately there are a lot of pundits and reporters who are oblivious to this (cough Friedman cough New York Times cough).
From the time this was set up, it was only a matter of time when Hillsdale was going to decide enough time had passed for it to assert “insufficient ideological purity” and try to take the money.

Gemerally, an endowed chair is for a subject area not a particular approach to a subject. After all what happens when the Austrian School is shown to be inaccurate? Oh right, this is a chair for propaganda, not a chair for academic research. And a bunch of right wing know nothings get to decide whether or not they are teaching “correctly.” My real question here is what jackass agreed to those conditions? Are they as dumb as the Hilldalers?

The defence is simple: the endowment was exhausted years ago. $5 million evaporates over 17 years. So the conditions of the endowment were met and there is no longer any requirement to follow conditions from an exhausted endowment.
Counter-sue that Christian school into receivership.
That, and shut down the loony-bin faculty.

I have yet to hear of a donor to a business or economics program in a major university that would dictate say Keynesian yet the Koch’s or these folks from Hillsdale are pushing the boundaries of Libertarianism.
Around a couple of decades ago the president of Hillsdale endured a major sex scandal that you figure would have given donors second thoughts, but hey wingnut welfare.

The very notion of requiring a professor to adhere to a school of thought is the opposite of what academic freedom is all about. It imposes conclusions not inquiries. I really don’t care who wins this case because both sides are crazy. The only difference is I knew the college was nutty; I thought Mizzou was a first rate university, when, in fact, it worse than the college because others many others took the place seriously. Sorry for the students, sorry for the serious scholars, sorry for the teachers who view their job as teaching people to think.
Hannah Arendt pointed out that education in totalitarian countries was not about teaching people what to think, but teach them not to think at all.

The “disciple” of a dead Austrian who never even described the world accurately, let alone make a useful prediction about it, would be a crank whose theories have no explanatory power and even less predictive value! No legitimate university should want anything to do with them.
I think I’m filing this under “fruit of the poisoned Hobby Lobby tree.” It’s what we get when sincerely held beliefs, completely divorced from objective reality, are the basis of lawsuits.

…it is a rocket attack on Mizzou … it is a manifestation of the anger at higher education institutions that these right wing zealots hate because these institutions do not conform to the rigid right wing strident ethnic purity and narrominded philosophy of the right.
…and how can Nixon legitimately be legal counsel in this case? Wouldn’t he potentially be called to testify ? Or have had direct authority over certain parties?
