CNN’s Chris Cuomo Coached NY Guv. Brother On Handling Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Once and for all, the fact that they’re brothers is more reason to not be involved in the situation. He’s a big boy and presumably can handle it himself. I’m telling you how things are regarding what’s considered ethical in the industry and I’m tired of getting told no things are some other way.

I agree and I think it points to a weakness in how we handle potential conflicts of interest between family members.

Insisting that obviously a wife is a separate individual from her husband or that brothers are independent actors is inconsistent with turning around and saying obviously family members talk to each other.

We need to find something in between “it’s totally cool for the senate majority leader to be married to the transportation secretary” and “only one member of a family can have a career”

They are brothers…

Hannity and dipshit having daily talks… that is a bit more of a issue.

Are any of these calls recorded? I miss Car Talk.

The thing is I strongly suspect that the industry has a different and more stringent set of standards than the voters do.

Typicap Voter:
The guy’s helping his brother. He thinks he can’t be fair reporting on it so he’s not. Sounds fair. What’s the problem?

The industry generally strikes a balance where of course you have opinions but you’re expected not to be super public about it. Can you crusade for things? Sure. But in a news context. Is there an un- or under-addressed problem? Crusade away. Just strive not to take public or explicit sides in a controversy. Obviously the Trump administration was utterly unconcerned about conflicts of interest; the administration itself was one huge conflict of interest. The news business has different guidelines but a similar relatively undemanding standard: that you at least try to avoid blatant conflicts.

Or
“I’m a Supreme Court Judge and my wife paid for insurrectionists to be bused to the Capitol to stop legal votes from being counted.”

Typical voters don’t set the standards for this. You’re supposed to avoid the appearance of impropriety. Your daughter-in-law might be the best candidate for a job opening you have. Do you hire her? Not if you want to avoid that appearance. The whole enterprise is based on the public having a certain level of confidence in you. If that’s gone, you have a problem. You do what you can.

He was deemed to be not ready for ‘Prime Time’.

Oh. Well. Now you’re just being a bad sport, or what legal sorts call ‘a poopy-head.’

Yes. The goal is to avoid “even the appearance of impropriety” and this could be improper if Chris used his time on air to steer the conversation, mislead the audience, or to pressure others to do the same.

And now that we are wandering even near the line republicans / project Veritas will find “someone who overhead a conversation about something” and try to spin it. CNN will have no real defense as they shouldn’t even be here and Hannity will run with some new lie as clear proof that liberals run the media and are in cahoots with the current administration.

Meanwhile, Hannity was actively represented by Cohen while Cohen was being arrested, and Hannity spun lie after lie with no disclosure or recusal at all. Only one side is trying to play by the rules.

Yeah, that one too. Note: I believe no evidence has been produced to date that Ginny funded insurrection busses. But she has for years received payment from groups whose goal was to bring cases before her husband and has advocated for particular policies to the legislative and executive branch. Which is outrageous and should have been stopped long ago

Fire his ass

CC is really not all that smart. People are paid to make him look good

I know. I worked with him

Their follies shame their father’s legacy

Look. I’ve said before “for the last time” but obviously that was futile. It’s my goddamn fucking opinion that Cuomo should have backed the fuck off of this. That’s based on my understanding of the best practices in a field that I was in for FUCKING DECADES. It doesn’t matter that the other guys have thrown their own rule book out the window so who even cares. It doesn’t matter what seems sensible and intuitive if you don’t know the culture of the fucking industry. I’m trying to tell you WHAT THAT CULTURE IS. If you don’t want to hear it then fuck the fuck off. I DO NOT CARE. If it at all matters to you to learn more about why journalists question this, listen on. If not, kiss my ass. Either way is a matter of complete indifference to me.

I’m dragging my feet to a Lyft, but i theek that this is the second time he has done the ‘witch’s honor’ gag

Why?

Because there is an inherent obligation in journalism to be aloof, to be separate, to be an observer, not a participant.

To be accurate…yes, yes, yes. But a Sibling Suckup is unacceptable

CC should have hung up the phone once there was any discussion about his brother

Think Murrow. Think Conkite. Think Jennings

Fire the idiot

Mario Cuomo weeps

He said he could not be impartial. He’s not working on the story. So he is separated from the story. He gets to participate in life, politics, entertainment, etc., so long as it’s not connected to his work, just like judges get to participate in business, but must recuse themselves if their business’s case comes before them. Murrow, Cronkite, Jennings? Chris Cuomo is a talking head host, nothing more. Let’s not get it twisted.
