As an academic back in the day, I learned pretty early that being highly regarded in one field doesn’t validate you positions in another. I had a colleague who was truly at the top of his (obscure, very esoteric) biological discipline who started into this tirade about some recent professional wresting outcome - turns out he doesn’t believe it’s faked.

The Trump administration really is hopeless. China, the guys who burn all that coal, are moving to a carbon tax. It’s pretty bad when you are less progressive than the Communist Party of China.

I didn’t realize that Happer’s science denial committee had been disbanded. Odd that it didn’t last nearly as long as Kris Kobach’s voter suppression committee. A story in the Times today said in effect that Happer’s efforts were disapproved by others in the maladministation, but it gave no examples. So it would seem he couldn’t get his project off the ground and therefore resigned. Yet I think we can expect more of these sociopathic policy groups to emerge before Trump goes away.

Another good time for us to remind ourselves that Trump never does the right thing, but when you do nothing but the wrong thing 100% of the time, it will inevitably sometimes cancel out some earlier wrong thing you did.

Getting Happer out of any kind of climate conversation is a good thing, the guy is a real menace.
Those of us who do science are used to people who don’t work in our area trying to tell us what is really going on, but usually it’s a conversation where they have an idea based on their experience that doesn’t apply and they graciously concede and learn something. It’s a small number of people who think their knowledge applies universally and that anyone who disagrees with them is a moron. And, frankly, there are a much larger number of non-scientists who act this arrogant, with far less reason to do so…it’s tiring sometimes to have conversations with someone who has no clue how the universe works and yet tells you something that’s physically impossible and then yells when you explain reality to them…

I believe it was Rick Santorum who said something to the effect that politicians should be involved in science because the scientists couldn’t be trusted to come to the right conclusion.
