Yup, blurting that out in court raises the issue that Thomas IS having side conversations with Trump’s lawyers, probably through intermediaries. I hope a BUNCH of intrepid journalists track it down. Who talked with Thomas and/or his staff? How were instructions getting sent? Which other Supreme Court justices might have heard about this, or perhaps also had messages/conversations with Trump’s intermediaries or lawyers. How long is the discussion chain? Did it flow one way or both ways? Was it “theoretical” or direct? Were any “gifts” involved before or after the communication. Go get a Deep Throat style inside source, come on journalists work the case!

Certainly no enforceable ethics standards compelling recusal, but even Roberts would recognize that Thomas’ antics stink on ice and necessitate some proactive steps.

Clarence Thomas is utterly devoid of shame, steeped in corruption up to his eyeballs, simply doesn’t care how bad it looks, has gotten away with shocking things in the past, and fully expects to continue getting away with it until the day he keels over dead.
He wouldn’t recuse himself if he were personally named as a party to the suit, and got videotaped accepting bags of Krugerrands in exchange for an explicit promise to rule in favor of the person handing over the gold.
