Cheney: Addressing Capitol Attack ‘Matters Hugely To The Survival Of Our Country’ | Talking Points Memo

During a Fox News interview on Sunday he claimed that Trump had been unaware that a mob of his supporters were storming the Capitol until McCarthy called and urged him to tell them to stop.

Isn’t it well documented that Trump was watching TV all day Jan. 6?

And reiterated his big lie.

There is a fascist movement in our country, and it controls one of our two major parties. To call it anything different is a danger to our future.

As co-conspirators at so many points in the treachery, why would we want Reoublicans involved in the investigation in the first place?
ANY Republicans.
Others have alluded to it, but we need to sledgehammer that fact into the minds of the non-aligned and Dem aligned, also that this investigation SHOULD include a big chapter called “The Congressional Investigation into the Freedom Caucus and its Role in Trump’s illegal activities at the outset of his term.” Or something like that.
There WAS a Congressional Conspiracy, remember?
How was THAT not somehow germane to the whole intrigue in a very serious legal way?
In a seriously real way we can still roll it all right up into the whole “sedition in the name of false patriotism” thing, because it all ties together at the bowels somewhere Trump still floats around.
They met behind closed doors to prove it to us, just the idea we would have the guilty themselves somehow in charge of the investigation simply reeks of the same insider cynicism we suffered so egregiously over the last four years.
How can that not be calculated when we weigh the influences that led to Jan 6?
They were all and remain so, guilty of passive sedition even as Joe gets on with the future.

Republicans don’t belong anywhere near this investigation.
Any hand they have in it will be poison.

Maybe she wants to “hurry up the inevitable” and get it over and done, in order to move the party forward. She may see it as an opportunity for the corporate branch of the party to weed out the crazies who have taken over and are putting at risk the corporate agenda.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around McCarthy and his boys if they get on the commission issuing subpoenas to the leader(s) of the Antifa. To any of the leaders of the riots in Portland and elsewhere.
I also think that if we allow them this then they’re going to have to investigate the incidents of citizens being grabbed off the street, driven to a location where they are searched and their phones were taken, and then questioned. Only later to be dumped miles from where they were originally picked up. Also they have to try and argue that people don’t have the right to their attorney being present for the questioning.

All I’m “just saying” is that the Speaker should authorize two commissions, or one commission and one investigation. Republicans get a to ask their burning questions, while Dems get on with trying to unravel the who, when, and whys of 01/06.

No, but I’d say the American tent is big enough to hold anyone who believes in democracy and is willing to defend free and fair elections.

There is no requirement to live in the District, but there is a requirement that a Congresscritter be a resident of the state it represents.

Been there, done that, I would at least expect Liz to pick a new country for us to invade. Step out from her Dad’s shadow and all that.

McCarthy was in line to be Speaker when John Boehner stepped down but even the current GOP balked at having such a thundering dunderhead lead the party, and a hugely reluctant Paul Ryan was pressed into service.

Whatever happened to Paul Ryan?

Article I, section 2, paragraph 2 (emphasis added):

No person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the age of twenty five years, and been seven years a citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an inhabitant of that state in which he shall be chosen.

This is a behavior that seemed to become increasingly prevalent in the Trump era. When called out on one of Mr. Trump’s daily transgressions or the shameful acts of his administration, GOP pols would never try to defend them. They would just claim that the Dem/liberals were as bad or worse. The refusal to ever apologize, admit mistakes or argue against the merits of criticisms was one of the most damaging legacies of the Trump era. I suppose the most charitable interpretation is that they were laboring under the baleful gaze of a POTUS who viewed any admission of error as weakness.
