This is good. Whether or not Trump ultimately is responsive to the subpoena, there’s no point in the Committee circumscribing itself in its investigation. Self-circumscribing is not to be recommended.
No wonder Kevin is so worried. He may have to give up Trump or perjure himself. We’ll see.
It seems important to also interview some of the insurrectionists themselves so they can explain what drove them. And so the American people can get an idea of what these people are really like, how well- or mis-informed they are, what they understand about what happened, etc.
“Anybody who had a conversation with the White House and officials in the White House while the invasion of the Capitol was going on is directly in the investigative sights of the committee,” Thompson told WSJ.
“YOU get a subpoena…a YOU get a subpoena…and YOU get a subpoena!”
I think he sees his future receding to a point and, then, vanishing altogether.
He placed his bets: the cards aren’t falling his way and he’s confused bluster for a bluff.
McCarthy is definitely a potential witness…they can subpoena Herrera Beutler to lay the foundation to get McCarthy if necessary (or just point to the impeachment evidence, which critically included her statements). And, he’ll fight it, and lose…committee subpoenas have been through the judicial system and fighting those is a loser unless the Republican Supreme Court decides to change the law again. Yes, they may try to run out the clock, but the recent McGahn decision should make things run a lot quicker through the courts…and, running from the subpoenas will be a bad look for any representative running in 2022.
This is shaping up to be a very serious investigation, and will be seen as bipartisan by everyone except Republican partisans…the monkey business from last week will look even worse as the evidence is laid out. There’s a real chance that this damages Republicans so badly that they get totally trashed in 2022, which should have been obvious to them and reason to have the first go at this commission, where they could really screw with the process. It’s amazing that they were that dumb, especially McConnell…maybe it’s just more evidence they have given up on democracy and intend to go full on with the white supremacy and blocking non-Republican voters at every turn in 2022 and figure that this will be irrelevant in the end when they start overturning Democratic wins in all the states Republicans control.
In any case, this is going to be a critical investigation…tomorrow is going to be really eye opening for the public who hasn’t seen the insurrection in detail and hears from officers what it was really like. It may just take all of the wind out of the sails of the idea that Republicans support the police unquestioningly, which would be a huge blow to their 2022 strategy.
There is an opportunity here that I hope won’t be wasted. There have been numerous lists of questions that many would love to have presented and answered during these hearings. Softball questions, particularly of the participants and supporters of the event, will NOT be tolerated.
If the members of the committee want to get to the bottom of the event, then the hard questions must be asked. The evidence is there - we all saw it on TV as we all watched, horrified, at what we were seeing in real time. There’s no covering it over with platitudes and make-nice’s.
Most of us already knew the repubs are scoundrels, hypocrites, and amoral, but McCarthy’s childishness and buffoonery had probably been forgotten until he reminded us of his pathetic own (that caused him to give up his dream to Ryan) in which he admitted the Benghazi abuses were all about disqualifying Hillary.
Now he is accusing Dems of doing the same thing, but it just doesn’t work with anyone who possesses a normally functioning brain. January 6th will live on in infamy, and he is helping it along.
JustSecurity posted a list of questions and witnesses that seems like a good starting point, although I would dearly like to see some more members of Congress.
